Hello:
I am thinking of trying to get a Free-to-air setup done before spring. I would like to know if there are any FTA sellers/installers in Akron/Canton, Ohio, or even the Cleveland area..I know there was a thread started a few years ago on the subject, but I thought there might be some updated information..Thanks for any info..

Moribus:
I am looking for the sell/install all in one, and am shooting for this around income tax time. From what I see, Sadoun seems to have a good package price in a motorized system. If I go with them, I may very well be giving you a call when the time comes..Thanks for the offer..

Tim,

As said here before a few hundred times its always best to start with a stationary setup then go with a motor and defiantly go with one of the sponsors here. Let me know and I will help you if needed.

Start with dishpointer.com and make sure it is worth getting a motor ( no line of sight issues) before you get that setup.

Also somewhere on craigslist there is a company that installs FTA in the akron/canton area ,but I cant find it now. Maybe post something on craigslist and see what you get.

Satellite channel data and footprints courtesy of SatcoDX. Dish size values are beta at the moment.
All satellites which have a positive elevation (i.e. are above the horizon) at your location are listed here. Estimated dish sizes are also given. These are calculated based on your position within the footprint of the satellite (click on the footprint links to see a map of the footprint). These footprints are not always accurate and certainly not accurate when it comes to fringe reception, i.e. when you’re close to the edge of the footprint. So, the dish sizes should be taken as a first guess only.

Does this give anyone an Idea if a stationary might be all I need..As I said in another thread, I have a pole in my front yard that had Dish and Directv on it before..

Sorry Tim that person only sells FTA. They do not do installs. Check out THE LIST (forth tab from the left) at the top of this page and see what is available. Half of those sats that are on dishpointer are c-band (big dish) and the other ones we cannot see from this area (remember line of sight). Think about what you want to get. G18 (123) is probably the best for English programming.

Here's what I can receive (or not) according to dishpointer.com (Address number left out)

Satellites
Available Satellites for Wertz Ave. SW, 44710 (Lat: 40.79, Lon:-81.41)

Does this give anyone an Idea if a stationary might be all I need..As I said in another thread, I have a pole in my front yard that had Dish and Directv on it before..

You need to look towards the satellites from your house and see if you have a clear line of sight. Looking at that street on Google Maps I see a lot of houses fairly close together with some tall looking trees in some areas. The True South satellite would be AMC9 @ 83° and its direction is basically straight south on Wertz Ave.

Most interesting satellites like 97°, 101°, 123°, 125° are off to your West so you need to look from straight down Wertz to about a 45° angle off Wertz towards Concord. If you don't have a compass handy you can compare your Dish Network dish, or your Neighbor's. A Dish 500 will be pointed at around 114.5° to get 110/119.

To the East you can pickup a lot of feeds on 72/74/79 for example. You should also be able to go as far East as Hispasat at 30° without too much trouble. If your dish is on a post in the front yard it might end up a bit low to clear the neighbor's houses for some of the satellites on the ends of the arc.

You could take a few photos from the pole. One pointing about 45° East of Wertz, one straight South down Wertz, one about 45° West of Wertz. Post them and we can look at your LOS.

From what I see on the FTAList.com, I'd like to try to get the 72-123 West Satellites..In general, would one stationary 36" dish work for this..(Sorry for all the newbie questions)

If you mean 72-123 from the same fixed dish, without moving it manually, then the answer is no. You can only get satellites a few degrees to either side if you use outboard LNBFs.

If you mean 72-123 by *moving* the dish by hand, that should be easy provided you have line of sight (LOS) to all the satellites. That is not a bad option to start with and then when you have more experience you can get a motor or a few more dishes. :)

StarOne has three types of beams (where signal is sent), South American which is for all of South America, Brazil which is spotted to Brazil, and Mexican which is spotted to Central America. You being in Florida, I'm sure you can't get it?

Oooops, I forgot about Intelsat 903, it has mostly European and African beams on it. I doubt you'll get it either? But if you find a Global beam or a West Hemisphere beam, you might get lucky? I don't see either on lyngsat, but it has a spot2 beam that goes to Northern South America. I doubt you could get it in Florida though?

I'll always place my vote for a bigger dish, and if you can afford a better lnb, go for it. Either would probably improve your signal....?

I only get about 40 channels from Hispasat, so you're doing better than I am.

Short answer, I don't know......?
I used to work with a guy, who bet me $10 that he could pick a dime up off the floor with a fork lift. I told him he was crazy. I was so sure he couldn't do it, I told him that if he did it, I would give him the $10. It was impossible. Yet he put the dime on the floor, placed one of the forks on the dime, putting pressure on it, and backed the fork lift up. And the dime popped right onto the fork, kind of like a tiddley wink. So what do I know?
I'm saying you most likely won't get StarOne from Florida, but I'm also saying to give it a shot. To me that's what FTA is all about, trying to get something that others can't imagine. Now if you had a 9m dish (over 30'), I'd say you'd have a better chance, but I still don't think you'd get it?

I don't know anything about ka lnb's. I do know that Directv uses them, but their channels are scrambled, so I have no interest in getting a ka lnb. I don't even know where to get one from a vender. I guess you could take one off a Directv dish and try it out. Then you could tell us what it will get, as well as the difference between ka and ku? I don't remember reading anywhere on this forum (or anywhere else), where someone has tried a ka-band lnb for FTA, I have read about people thinking about the possibilities, but I don't remember anyone actually trying one.
