Kreeger Museum

An art museum in a stunning architectural setting, the Kreeger Museum is the former residence of Washington philanthropists Carmen and the late David Lloyd Kreeger. It displays their personal collection of 19th-and 20th-century painting and sculpture-plus African and Asian sculpture. More than 180 works of art from the 1850s to the 1970s are shown in the museum, which was designed by the noted American architect Philip Johnson and completed in 1963. It is one of his early forays into postmodernism. The museum is a respite from the larger museums on the Mall. Here visitors can encounter art on an intimate scale in an extraordinary building.
