What do you think Voom will add Oct. 1st?

Nothing, we wont have the new dishes and dual LNB's, software and wm9/mpeg4 modules. They had better GET THEIR A$$es up on peoples roofs now!!!!(30 thousand of them right now). at 12,000 subs a month thats 48k+30K= 78 thousand dishes to replace

Seems difficult for me to understand why they would install the 18in dishes from the beginning anyway. They had to know of the plans for conversion. I dont get it. Anyway I also agree that there is no way that they will convert everyone to the new dish by October. They can add new ch's right now if they wanted...dont they have enough bandwidth for 3 new HD ch's?

I think this forum could be a firestorm if many of the early Voomers [noble 600(0)] are left waiting for an upgrade when the new birds go active. I don't think they'll be able to complete the swap in time.

To reply to the thread, I think we'll see more SD programming added immediately. RSNs probably not right away, but before 2005. Never will we get InHD or HDNET, at least not an InHD showing HD baseball games. I'm expecting a boatload, I mean like 20 , of HD PPV to come online. Also, more HD porn options, which is always good.

I say nothing because they could add some now, 2 HD and some SD. But where is it? Are the voom excuses in regard to INHD going to stop on OCT 1? What makes anyone think more channels will be here OCT 1 ? Because of the leases? The leases depend on the things I mentioned above. Voom had better start scheduling dish changes if that is the case.

I hate to be negative but given:

1) mounting frustration of new customers who can't even get an install.
2) overloaded CSRs and unanswered calls.
3) STB that is really horrible considering it's been 8 months (yeah I know, soon soon). I mean there are HD STBs that are 3-4 years old but are more functional and user friendly than the Voom box. It's like they'd never seen a decent STB before and had no idea how a decent one was supposed to work.

What are the chances that by 10/1 they will magically flip the switch and voila, everyone's had their dish and receiver upgraded and we'll all be watching new HD channels.

For the same reasons, I have serious doubts about the PVR. I can just picture what a nightmare that thing will be, from the install to the hardware to the software.

(Oh if anyone from Voom is reading, I'll be happy to beta test the PVR. I'm a trooper :)

Like many of you, I don't think that VOOM will have the extra capacity in place by Oct 1. However, independently of that, the fact is that today it has capacity for 2 extra HD channels. inHD1/2? Let's cross fingers and hope that the AVSForum moderators are right.

They could add the new stuff on the new bird so the new dishes only have to be put up for the people that want the extra stuff.

Hmmmm...Interesting.

Maybe the existing bird would become the "Basic VOOM" sat and the VA VA Voomers would need the upgrade to get all the extras?
Almost makes sense. That way you wouldn't have an additional investment in that part of the market generating lower cash flow.

i couldnt agree more. I dont know why anyone would sign up for voom to watch 21 channels of old repeats? or second or third rate sporting events?

As for new HD channels, I'm expecting more originals like the EquatorHD we're about to get rather than INHD or HDNET. As long as they add more content with appropriate sound and picture quality, I'd be happy. I don't really care what specific channels they are.

Voom will Surprise everyone !

I think Voom will surprise everyone. They came from nowhere, i had never even heard of them a year ago, to now being the buzz of town. Everyone is talking about Voom or getting it. Try getting an install now, it takes a month. I believe they will swap all the dishes in time maybe before Christmas. Remember not one installer will be doing it. There are 50 states, countless cities in each state, countless suburbs in each city. If there are 800 installers nationwide they would have to do less that 100 dishes each to swap the birds for the 30 inches. Its all a numbers game guys. I say DVR in July, 10 more HD channels by end of year and HD PPV, and Dish and Direct getting a run for their money.

Some of you are assuming that we won't see much in the way of new channels until everyone (or most everyone) gets the new dish. I don't think that's necessarily true at all.

Dish Network did exactly this when they originally rolled out the Dish500. New channels were added to the Dish TOP120 package, and you didn't get the Dish500 for free (at first) unless you subscribed to that package.

Ultimately, I expect the dish upgrades will be offered free with no strings attached (just as the Dish500 is now free to all Dish subscribers), but that may not necessarily be the case from the start. The dish upgrade is going to be cost VOOM a lot of money, and they may not want to pass up the opportunity to have some customers subsidize their new dish install. It's going to take at least several months to replace 30+k dishes, so I think chances are good that they'll find some way to prioritize installs for customers that will actually be buying programming on the new dish.

As the TechCop suggests, VOOM may add one or more HD channels to the VaVaVoom package on the new dish. VaVaVoom subscribers would therefore take priority for the dish upgrade. Existing Basic customers might be given the option to receive the new dish install for free if they commit to say, six months of VaVaVoom.

The possibility also exists that VOOM will announce some new programming packages-- like an Adult HD package or new premium sports packages-- in advance of October 1. Customers ordering one or more of these packages would take priority for the new dish upgrades. Customers that commit to a year of programming may also receive priority for the new dish. Dish Network did this with the their Dish500 -- they had new packages on their 110 satellite, and you only got the dish upgrade for free if you agreed to subscribe to some of the new programming.

It's conceivable that many customers--who don't sign up for any new programming or make any new commitment-- will not get the dish until well after January 1. It's entirely possible that there will be some customers who have no need for the new dish -- if they only subscribe to Basic or Basic+HBO and aren't interested in sports packages, adult programming, or HD PPVs.
