I currently subscribe to Dish NW, and would like to purchase a FTA satellite receiver. What do I need to know about the different receivers and which ones will work with my Dish 500 sat. dish?

The dish 500 is too small to receive FTA signals. You need at least a 30" dish with a linear LNB.
To answer the question, with a FTA receiver you should be able to get ION, Angel 1, and NASA off 119w. there are some other channels but they dont amount to much. Blindscan is an important feature to people getting started. Coolsat 5000's are popular with a lot of memebers here. Here is a link that might help.
