Hey all. I'm pretty new to Directv, so forgive me if this is common knowledge.

We have the HR21 as well as your basic D12. I have scrolling off for both, yet the guide and changing channels is significantly faster on the D12. I'd think as nice as the HR21 is (with all the bells and whistles), that it would be the faster of the two. Why is there such a difference in speed?

The D12 is a receiver only and therefore doesn't need to buffer any of the signal as it comes in. The HR series immediately starts recording a channel as soon as you tune to it, and therefore there is about a 1 second natural buffer before something is displayed.

This should really only be visible on the audio/video display of the channel, not necessarily on the channel scrolling in the guide.

Gotcha. The channel changing I can understand.

The guide is another thing. Any ideas why there is such a HUGE speed disparity between the two when bringing the guide up, navigating the guide, as well as scrolling through pages of channels? The D12 is about as instant as you can get, whereas the HR21 has a noticeable pause.

Perhaps there is something wrong with my receiver. Has anyone else seen both an HR21 and D12 in action that can corroborate what I see?

This is an ongoing issue. It has gotten better and hopefulyl will continue to get better.

Well I have an HR20, but I'm pretty sure I have a D12 (I'm assuming that's the standard SD receiver) and yes there is quite a disparity in loading times for those features. And I'm sure the reasoning has to do with what the other people have already posted.

Do they have differing amounts of on-board memory? Maybe differing firmware where one's code is more efficient.

If both boxes were on the national firmware/software versions, do standard SD receivers normally have the same software as H/HR series boxes? I would guess that the non-DVR receivers are "lighter" on the coding since they only have to pass the signal through and don't need to do anything to the signal (except for maybe Native On/Off). Never had a non-DVR from D*, so I really don't know. Just speculation.

I have the same setup the OP is speaking of, and mine is the same as well. Hopefully they continue to improve it..
