A great informative post over at AVS

HD DVD Dude said:
Ok thought it would be a good idea to have a thread with a list of imports available.
Other information that can be put here could include if audio language is available in english, if menus are able to be put into english and if subtitles are removable.
I don't have any imports yet myself because I don't know which ones have english menus, audio and no subtitles, but this thread could help me and anyone else who is wanting these imports but are being held back for similar reasons. Anything for the HD DVD cause :D .

Pitch Issue
I have been asked by several posters to include information on the 'pitch issue' which seems to be limited to French Studio Canal releases. This issue is noticed by some more than others, but there is no doubt that there is a difference and this is most noticable when comparing the HD DVD to their Blu-ray or DVD counter-parts.

Titles which the issue have been noticed on include:

Basic Instinct
Elephant Man, The
Graduate, The
Mulholland Drive
Rambo: First Blood
Rambo: First Blood Part 2
Rambo III
Total Recall

I wouldn't mind having T-2...

T-2 is very good. Even with having a PS3, I went for the French T-2 as it is rated much better audio & video. It comes in a 2 disc set, Extended & Theatrical version. I got mine from Xploited Cinema. They also have Mr. & Mrs. Smith on HD DVD, a Polish import, but at $39.95 I haven't pulled the trigger - yet. Waiting to see if Fox ever decides to release in HD again.

But you need to read reviews & evaluate carefully - some of the French (Studio Canal) releases have "pitched audio" due to converting PAL 25fps encodes to 1080p24fps. I read a review of "Basic Instinct" that said while the French HD DVD video was much better than the U.S. Blu-ray, the pitched audio made the actors sound like they inhaled Helium before they spoke their lines. :(

Thanks to this "format war" or, more accurately - some studios' attempt to force their customers to choose one format over the other - I now have:

Terminator - Blu-ray (US, MGM)
Terminator 2 - HD DVD (French, Studio Canal)
Terminator 3 - HD DVD (US, Warner)

Rambo: First Blood - Blu-ray (US, Lionsgate)
Rambo II - HD DVD (French, Studio Canal)
Rambo III - HD DVD (French, Studio Canal)

Detect a pattern here? I get the first in a series on Blu-ray, and then start looking to see if there's a better quality alternative on HD DVD. :tux:
