I am thinking about switching from my present cable to DirecTV and have been getting information from their web site. I'm trying to understand just what equipment I need, costs, etc. I find I am a bit confused about the HD DVR. The description almost sounds as if the DVR doubles as an HD Receiver. However, my experience with DVRs (I've had two different brands, but neither from DirecTV) is that while they have a very good picture on playback, they are, nonetheless, not quite as clear and sharp as the pure, live signal.

Is the “normal” setup to have both an HD DVR and an HD Receiver on the same TV?

The simplest answer is yes, the DVR is the receiver, recording and playback device.

There is no need for a separate DVR and receiver. One box does it all.

Quite honestly you will be hard pressed to find any difference between the original source program and the recorded one.

Wow

Wow, really? I've had both ReplayTV and TiVo and the playback was clearly not as sharp as the incoming signal - and that was just SD, not HD.
