HD Tuner with SD Receiver

I have SD directTivo and was wondering if it's possible to use a stand alone HD tuner w/ DVR?? I know they have HD DirectTivo but was just curious to know if they have set top boxes that can be used with a satellite receiver.

You wouldn't be able to record HD and keep it HD. What I mean is it would be downconverted to SD.

I don't believe you can hook anything to the SD Directv and record to it.

Thanks for the replies. Just so I uderstand this though, I could use the separate set top box with the receiver and receive HD programming? But everything I record will be down converted? The reason I am curious is because I have the opportunity to get my hands on a tuner for FREE! But if I can't use it then its pointless. Even if I can't record at all but can still receive the programming I will take it.
