How do Manual timers work on a DVR?

I have a question that I could not find the answer to. I see several posts about setting manual timers on the DVR, what is this exactly? I have always selected the program i wanted to record in the time slot and it recorded it on all dvrs that i have had. What are they used for?

Basically the same as how you program a VCR, that is you set it to a certain channel at a specific time. It will record that time period regardless of what the program is assuming no timer conflict. For me especially usable for recording OTA programs that do not have guide info.
