How does one go about checking a UA # on a commercial style receiver nowadays? I would like to check before I buy.

Call the manufacturer or satellite provider and ask them to search that STBs serial number to see if the box is free and clear (no balance due). You will have to ask the seller to provide the serial number and model number of the box first. Give this info to the satellite provider and they should be able to tell you immediately. With newer boxes you will probably need the MAC address of the receiver, too. If the seller won't provide you with this information, don't buy it. It may either be stolen or it has a balance due that you need to consider into the price.

Wait, on a commercial receiver?
I didn't think an end-user could activate one, so it didn't matter?

... and that checking, would just guarantee it was de-authorized?
Maybe I've missed the boat here. :)

"COMMERCIAL" reciever... Awhh, that would put a twist in it, wouldn't it. That won't be the same as buying a used home receiver. I would still go to the mfg or the provider of the service that it was last used for or possibly designed for. Ask them what direction to proceed from.

Most of the DCII commercial boxes are like the consumer 4DTV's, in that the unit ID has to be:
1. Previously authorized and...
2. Not corrupted (dead back-up battery etc)
...in order for it to pull in the freebies. :)

I dont think a consumer could call to verify anyways.....as noted they cant be activated

Unless its a virgin unit you should be OK with it working
