the reason I figured I got an update is when I hit the skip button and it "slipped" (the 30 second fast forward).

I checked via the system settings
menu
settings
settings again
main page shows the software and when it was downloaded

Nah, usually a bad cable either won't work or gives there white sparkles on screen.

nope works fine here on a HDMI cable

Mine did once...I just unplugged the HDMI and plugged it back in again. Works fine now for me.
