What are you wanting to hoping to upgrade to ?I have the original genie. Is there anyone on the directv side to help with upgrades like on the dish network side.
His point was if he already has other DVRs ...You won’t need other DVR’s the hs17 has 8 tuners.

Aside from the fact it actually only has 7 tuners, who are you to say 7 (or 8) tuners IS enough for a given person's situation...especially considering you, yourself, have 2 added DVR's...BESIDES your Genie, (according to your signature anyway...) which gives you NINE tuners! You won’t need other DVR’s the hs17 has 8 tuners.

Since the OP didn't say how many other DVR's he currently has, you have no idea if "downgrading" to an HS17, IS going to be enough for his particular needs. I have several clients that besides a Genie, have 4+ other DVR's in their homes...for them to downgrade to an HS17, (& loose all those other DVR's) would be completely insane! Not to also mention if the OP might have an extra receiver that they take camping, tailgating, etc...again, they will NOT be able to do that, either, if they go to an HS17. (at least w/out having to open up a separate D* account)
Hopefully the OP takes note of mdram's completely sensible point, if it applies to them...
All this because I asked the OP what he was wanting to / needing to upgrade too ....
Fwiw, all the responses and the OP hasn't responded one way or the other yet ....
they will upgrade me at no charge. but then again here comes the nightmare of the tech taking away the power inserter wich is needed for long coax runs to the dish and the nightmares would start all over again with the LNB not getting enough juice to it!!!Yes.
Tell them to leave it the way it is ...they will upgrade me at no charge. but then again here comes the nightmare of the tech taking away the power inserter wich is needed for long coax runs to the dish and the nightmares would start all over again with the LNB not getting enough juice to it!!!
There are certain numbers involved that you need to consider and I don't know what they are, but others will.Ok thanks for all the info. I have 5 tv to hook up. Right now I have the original genie with 4 mini one that is 4K. Just need more turners I run into all turners being being tie up and not being able to change the channel to watchlive tv while some things are being recorded for the wife.
i remember someone stating on here that the genie only streams one 4k show at a time and the genie 2 does 2 4k shows at once. as far as the hd goes i have no idea how many minis the genie can handle... the new genie 54 losses the e sata port as well so if an external HDD is a must then forget it on the new genie nor does the genie 2 have an e sata port.. DTV says you can have upto 8 minis on a genieThere are certain numbers involved that you need to consider and I don't know what they are, but others will.
If you have 5 TV's ...
1 Genie covers 5 or 7 streams depending on which Genie you have ... do you have the HR54 or the HS17 ... the HS17 gives you more streams ... however, regardless, you can only be streaming on so many at a time ... I thought 5 was how many you could have and 3 was the limit of use at the same time ...
Its been a while since I have looked into this ... someone here will expand on this info.
