Not in my experience. For example, I can watch the CW and PBS on Direct; I couldn't tolerate them on Dish. Was SD-only on Dish better? I had HD with them.

Huh? I watch CW and multiple PBS stations in HD on Dish. For me AHC, Blaze and Newsmax are SD only and very watchable on DISH.
No HD PBS or CW in Wichita Falls, TX on Dish. In fact, the local CW is not carried here on Dish in SD, just one from Florida. We also get the Dallas PBS in SD.
CW and PBS on Directv in Wichita Falls are SD only (PBS from Dallas). CW is HD with an antenna.
