I went to DTV's website to add a HD RECEIVER. They gave me an offer to get an HD DVR for the same price of $99 instead of $199. So obviously I chose the HDDVR instead.

I just received it today, and it is a used or refurbished model. The cables look like they were packaged very amateur, not "factory fresh", but the big thing is that it is an HR21-100.
My other HD DVR that I got when I first joined DTV is an HR21-700, and it was NEW.

What's the deal with this, why are they sending used equipment, and why the small hard drive? I thought they already came out with HR23, HR24, etc. Why the older model?

Should I complain to them?

I would. Refurbs should only be sent as replacements for broken receivers, not new additions to an account. I would complain. You can always say it was DOA....not that I would ever encourage being dishonest.....

Being a refurb isn't necessarily a bad thing. It might work just a well as a new one. You aren't guaranteed new when you get one from Directv.

I just replaced my last Samsung Mpeg-2 receiver & received the Hr22-100 model. The sad thing is he had two HR24"s in his truck to play around with & no bribe or gratuity was getting those units. I did get to play around with them & invited him to our site as he was the most knowledgeable DTV ever sent to my house. He knew all about SWiM & MDU installations & generally a very nice guy. Thought I'd at least get the HR23 in the Chicago market but the HR22-100 is what I got. Reading between the lines, & if I really want the HR24's, he's prepared to call me when they are made available to the public. I'm not sure what DTV would think of this change for no reason other than looks?

Ok, but how do they decide which hard drive size I am getting?
What is it just Random?
They have the commercial running that they have the largest capacity DVRs.

The model number that you get is random. They look at all the receivers as interchangeable since they all perform about the same except for the HR24s which they are not shipping yet. The 22s and 23s have reputation for being slow. I have 3 HR20s and 2 HR21s that are still going strong.

Thanks,
But I was actually more refering to the "-100" part and not the "HR21" part.
How can they treat different hard drive sizes as the same?
Anyway, I guess its not a big deal since I have an extra esata 1gb drive lying around that I can attach to it:)

I was thinking the 100 and 700 just designated the different manufacturers of the units?

The suffix number does designate the manufacturer, so n4uaj is right about that. The different models have different size hard drives, but within the model, I think they are all the same size. As far as Directv is concerned, they are all equivalent. It remains to be seen how they will handle the new HR24 model, since that is a definite upgrade from the previous units.

Cool, so its not as bad as I thought. I don't where I got the idea that the hard drive was different.
Thanks for the help guys.

Like I said, different models have different size hard drives. The HR20 and 21 are 320 gb, the 22 and 23 are 500 gb.
