i just got a samsung led dlp hlt5087s and had dish hd installed today. i have the 722 box connected via hdmi to the tv, then an optical audio from the tv to receiver, but no sound. regular cabletv passes the audio to the optical so i know it works. does my tv not pass the audio from hdmi to the optical? do i need optical straight from the 722 to my receiver? thanks for the help:)

Go optical direct from 722 to receiver

I don't know whether your TV passes audio from HDMI to optical, but the conventional thing is to connect the optical audio direct from the 722 to the receiver. Give it a try.

Good luck, and welcome to the neighborhood!

You will get better sound with optical from the 722 to the receiver because the HDMI only passes stereo. When I only had OTA HD, the optical from the TV to the receiver was great. I still have that connection in case I need to use the TV tuner as a backup.
I also made a secondary Component connection from my 622 to my TV so I don't have to mute the TV speakers when doing surround sound, just change TV input from HDMI to Component.
