White Hunter, Black Heart (1990)

<p><img border="0" src="http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B00009N83Z.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg" align="left" hspace="5">Unjustly overlooked in Clint Eastwood's oeuvre, this critical examination of the hubris of machismo predated Unforgiven by just two years and meditated on similar themes. Eastwood plays a macho movie director, in Africa ostensibly to shoot a movie, but more pressingly (to his mind, anyway) to bag an elephant. The story is based loosely on the true story of John Huston's behavior while making The African Queen; Eastwood's Huston imitation (the character here is named Wilson) will no doubt prove distracting to some--he drawls out vowels to the point of breaking--but he captures both the arrogance of and the magnetic force behind the man. The film boasts splendid visuals by cinematographer Jack Green, and the final scene--and Eastwood's performance therein--is nearly heartbreaking. --David Kronke.

Clint eastwood stars in and directs the colorful tale of a flamboyant filmmaker's flair for danger and adventure while on location in Africa, based on Peter Viertel's novel inspired by The African Queen. Year: 1990 Director: Clint Eastwood Starring: Clint Eastwood, Jeff Fahey, George Dzundza

rrobe99999 : (2-star) Clint Eastwood plays a director on location in Africa obsessed with hunting elephants. He didn't do a good job of playing that role.

Tvlman : 3 STARS - An astonishing story of a Hollywood Director making a film in Africa but wanting to bag an elephant first. (Supposed to be a true story of guess who....John Huston)

Being Human (1994)

<p><img border="0" src="http://images.amazon.com/images/P/630318457X.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg" align="left" hspace="5">Anyone having high hopes for the artistic collaboration between Robin Williams and director Bill Forsyth (who made Local Hero, perhaps the most enjoyable film of the 1980s) probably left this movie disappointed. Forsyth is attempting nothing less than The Ages of Man, using Williams as his representative of humanity through history. Cast as a kind of Everyman, Williams plays a guy who can't seem to get his family situation straightened out to his satisfaction, whether he's trying to protect his family from Vikings in prehistoric times, being a nomad in the Middle Ages, or showing up as an unhappy divorced guy in contemporary times who's trying to reconnect with his teenage daughter. It's worth a look, if only for the opportunity to see how a big idea can go decidedly wrong and to observe what happens when a director gets a hold of an unworkable concept that he believes in completely. Williams wears a pained expression through most of the film. --Marshall Fine

rrobe99999 : (3-star) Susan Dey (nude scene) in a Sci Fi about using CGI to create subliminal messages in comercials. I love 80s Sci Fi movies where they try to make futuristic technology that would be obsolete by today's standards. It was presented in its OAR on VOOM.

Life Stinks (1991)

<p><img border="0" src="http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B00007GZRN.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg" align="left" hspace="5">Life stinks--and if by "life" you mean this movie, then here indeed is truth in advertising. Mel Brooks totally missed the boat with this attempt at a comedy about life in the greedy Reagan years. He plays a heartless tycoon who bets that he could easily survive for a month on the streets of L.A. without a penny to his name, and then gets tricked out of his fortune. He winds up learning how the other half lives and it isn't funny. Literally. Watching this film, it's hard to believe it was made by the same man who wrote and directed The Producers. What does it tell you that this film was loved in France? --Marshall Fine

Mystic Pizza (1988, Comedy)

<p><img border="0" src="http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B000053VB4.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg" align="left" hspace="5">A sweet and sassy comedy about the bonds of sisterhood, Mystic Pizza offers the opportunity to see some solid young actors early in their careers. Three sisters of blue-collar Portuguese descent work in a pizzeria in the coastal town of Mystic, Connecticut. Each has her own unique romantic entanglements. One is the fast girl in town (Julia Roberts), who falls for a rich kid but wonders if she'll ever be accepted; one is the lifelong local girl (Lili Taylor) in love with her fisherman boyfriend (Vincent D'Onofrio) but scared of what marriage will do to their sex lives; and the youngest sister (Annabeth Gish) dreams of going to Yale but during a summer of baby-sitting has an affair with a married man. Through it all each sister depends on the others regardless of the complications. It's the alluring charm of the three disparate leads that makes Mystic Pizza the delightful experience it is. --Robert Lane </p>
Starring: Annabeth Gish, Julia Roberts Director: Donald Petrie Studio: Mgm/Ua Studios Aspect ratio 1.85 : 1

Voomer Reviews:

MattP-bgsu : I also remember Mystic Pizza 3 stars. Decent 80's movie.

TheTimm : 4 stars : A terrific little movie dealing with timeless themes of love and relationships, and featuring the timeless beauty and nuanced acting of a young Lili Taylor (not to mention some chick named Julia Roberts). Also kinda cool to see a young Vincent D'Onofrio as Ms. Taylor's love interest -- and a quick appearance (don't blink!) by Matt Damon (his debut?). Very good PQ, and while there isn't much call for fancy surround sound effects the music mix is surprisingly aggressive, and quite satisfying.

Thelma & Louise (1991, Drama)

<p><img border="0" src="http://images.amazon.com/images/P/630469878X.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg" align="left" hspace="5">Thelma & Louise is a feminist manifesto writ large on the big screen, a smart and funny gender reversal of the standard Hollywood buddy formula, a road movie extraordinaire, with characters who became instant cultural icons. No matter how you define it, Ridley Scott's 1991 box-office hit pinched a nerve and made the cover of national news magazines for tweaking gender politics like no movie before or since. Callie Khouri's screenplay overhauls the buddy formula with its story about two best friends (Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis) who embark on a liberating adventure that turns into an interstate police chase after a traumatic incident makes both women into fugitives; they are en route to a destiny they could never have imagined. The perfect casting of Sarandon and Davis makes Thelma & Louise a movie for the ages, and Brad Pitt became an overnight star after his appearance as the con-artist cowboy who gives Davis a memorable (but costly) night in a roadside motel. --Jeff Shannon </p>
Starring: Susan Sarandon, Geena Davis Director: Ridley Scott Studio: Mgm/Ua Studios Aspect ratio 2.35 : 1

Voomer Reviews:

MattP-bgsu : Thelma and Louise was good. First time I'd actually watched it all.

TechCop : 4.5 stars: It's a chic-flic, it's a action movie, it's funny, and it has LOADS of great actors. Great soundtrack, too. What more could you want?

TheTimm : 4 stars : Now I see what all the fuss was about - it's a damned good movie! In the spirit of full disclosure though, I must admit I find it hard to dislike anything with Geena Davis -- Hey, Voom-folks, how 'bout The Long Kiss Goodnight in HD? Please?

Dream Lover (1994)

<p><img border="0" src="http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B0001VTPUE.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg" align="left" hspace="5">If you ever thought you had a reason to suspect your significant other isn't all they claim to be, then this movie will definitely make you jumpy to find out more. The gorgeous Madchen Amick works her way into the heart of James Spader and starts him down a path of being everything he's ever wanted in a woman, yet there's things that she seems to be hiding from him. The paranoia keep growing throughout the movie as more and more clues are accidentally left for James Spader to find. It's disturbing how Madchen Amick's character is able to play Spader like a sap and trick him time and time again. Even when he catches onto her schemes, he's still not able to do anything about it because she has exit plans for everything she does. She gets away with all kinds of stuff and somehow gets people to blame James Spader's character for being unwarranted with his paranoia. It's not really an original story, but the movie is pretty disturbing. While I prefer different types of mysteries like The Courtyard more (another Madchen Amick movie), this movie provides a pretty good story with plenty of plot twists. -- </p>

Voomer Reviews:

Walter L. : 4.0 Star I thoroughly enjoyed this film the first time I saw it and was pleased to watched again in HD. Very well written script. Warning: very disturbing, it may happen to any of us HD transfer was excellent except no OAR.

Sean Mota : 4.0 stars I caught it the other night about 3am. I couldn't sleep. The movie stars very slow and it picks up later on. Quite a surprising ending and good one too. I kept wondering how the heck he got married to a woman that only invited one friend to the ceremony. That would be enough to say that something is wrong. Good movie. HD transfer was very good.

FredOh: Recent viewings that rocked: Mad Max with original australian soundtrack, Dream Lover, Evil Dead, Original Solaris, and Heaven and Earth. Better average than I usually get from A month of HB) (sopranos and Deadwood exlcuded)

Spellbinder (1988, Horror)

<p><img border="0" src="http://images.amazon.com/images/P/6301300521.01._PE_SCMZZZZZZZ_.jpg" align="left" hspace="5"> An attorney (Timothy Daly) rescues Miranda (Kelly Preston) from being beaten up by her abusive boyfriend in a parking lot. Then the two fall in love. However, it turns out that she is a witch as well as a runaway from her coven and they want her back. It turns out to be a satanic cult and they spend the picture chasing the two lovebirds all over town. Ends with a good twist. This movie is wonderfully hammy although sure to offend Wiccans everywhere. </p>
Starring: Timothy Daly Director: Studio: Fox Home Entertainment

Voomer Reviews:

Walter L. : 4.0 Stars Never watched this movie before until now on Cinema10. At the beginning was a little skeptical and I wasn't sure if I wanted to keep watchig it, but after 15 minutes it turns out to be very interesting movie and the end was unexpected. HD transfer was very good but again no OAR.

TheTimm. : 4 stars : I've been a fan of this movie for quite some time now. It has one of my favorite endings of any movie ever. It's a little on the cheesy side and some of the effects aren't quite as "special" as you'd expect from a modern horror film, but it's still a real enjoyable flick that responds well to HD and surround sound.

Molly (1999, Drama)

<p><img border="0" src="http://images.amazon.com/images/P/6305784876.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg" align="left" hspace="5"> The title character of Molly, played by Elisabeth Shue (Oscar nominee for Leaving Las Vegas), suffers from one of those afflictions that are only found in Hollywood movies: she's sort of mentally challenged, sort of autistic--but only enough to give her a childlike appreciation of rhythmic water fountains and The Wizard of Oz. An operation that somehow activates brain cells brings Molly to a more sophisticated level of intelligence, much to the astonishment and joy of her brother Buck (Aaron Eckhart, playing a much more sympathetic character than he did in In the Company of Men). Then, when her brain cell progress becomes threatened for some unclear reason, Molly and Buck are faced with her mental reversal. Aside from being scientifically dubious and somewhat insulting to mentally challenged people and their families, the developing sibling relationship has an emotional pull. Eckhart brings a quiet dignity to his role, lending a bit of realism with his understated performance. Shue, though saddled with an impossible character, has moments of naked emotion that almost make Molly believable. Thomas Jane (Deep Blue Sea), as a medical assistant with a never-explained "learning disability," does all he can with his equally inconsistent part but fares less well. Molly wants to be a combination of Forrest Gump and Flowers for Algernon, movies about discovering the meaning of life through an appreciation of simple things, but falls short </p>
Starring: Director: John Duigan Studio: Mgm/Ua Studios Aspect ratio 1.85 : 1

Voomer Reviews:

TechCop : 3 stars: The nude shot of Elizabeth Shue is worth 3 stars by itself. That tells you what I thought of the rest.

TheTimm : 3.5 stars: My two favorites so far are Molly and Rush. I'd give 'em both about 3 1/2 stars. I think Rush is the better movie - a drug classic - but Molly looked better transfer-wise.

The Spirit of St. Louis (1957, Bio)

<p><img border="0" src="http://images.amazon.com/images/P/6304359659.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg" align="left" hspace="5"> James Stewart was really too old in 1957 to reenact Charles Lindbergh's historic 1927 solo flight across the Atlantic in this movie, but he had no lack of enthusiasm for his role as Lindbergh. Billy Wilder directs this largely engrossing account of Lindbergh's deed, and comes up with some inventive ways (not all of them successful) of dramatizing the pilot's dangerous journey to Paris, which lasted 33-1/2 hours. Stewart is very good in the role, bringing his advanced technique from the extraordinary number of great films he made with brilliant directors (Hitchcock, Anthony Mann) in the 1950s. --Tom Keogh </p>

August (1996, Drama)

<p><img border="0" src="http://shopping.yahoo.com/video/images/muze/vhs/sm/18/120618.jpg" align="left" hspace="5"> In this gentle romantic comedy based on Chekhov's "Uncle Vanya," an English gentleman looking forward to a serene summer in the country finds the going a bit rough when he falls in love with his ex-brother-in-law's American wife. To add further insult, the woman's husband announces his plans to sell the family's ancestral estate. This film marks Hopkins' directorial debut, and he also composed the score. </p>
Starring: Anthony Hopkins, Leslie Phillips, Kate Burton, Gawn Grainger, Rhian Morgan Director: Anthony Hopkins Studio:

Voomer Reviews:

Tvlman : 4 STARS- This is one of Anthony Hopkins' finest screen performances in an English adaptation of Chekov's "Uncle Vanya." He also directed the film.

1080iBeVuMin : August" -- film from 1985 based on the play Uncle Vanya by Chekov. This film had one and a half stars, but I am very glad I caught it!! Acted and directed by Anthony Hopkins, and if you notice the ending credits "Music - Anthony Hopkins". (!!) What's up with that?

Watching this film is like watching live dramatic theater. Great stuff! It was on Cinema 1 last night.

The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean (1972, Westerns)

<p><img border="0" src="http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B00008WJBI.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg" align="left" hspace="5"> A remarkable blend of otherwise disparate philosophies about legendary men, this 1972 film was inspired in part by the epic dimensions of a John Milius (The Wind and the Lion) script, which was toned down by Paul Newman's charmingly eccentric approach to the title character, who in turn was deepened by director John Huston's sensitivity to the subject of fleeting dreams. The story concerns the famous outlaw-turned-lawmaker who rules over an empty stretch of the West that gradually grows, under his iron fist, into a thriving town. The film follows the quirky Bean's episodic adventures as the years pass and a variety of colorful characters come and go, including the muse who captivated his soul, the actress Lily Langtry (Ava Gardner). Huston's textured approach has an almost Altmanesque feel to it, though he demands more (and rewardingly so) obvious performances from the cast, particularly a hilarious cameo by Stacy Keach as the one tough-as-nails SOB who makes Bean a tad nervous. Highly entertaining. --Tom Keogh </p>
Starring: Paul Newman Director: John Huston Studio: Warner Home Video Aspect ratio 1.85 : 1

Voomer Reviews:

Tvlman : 3 STARS - One of Newman's best films. The yarn is interesting, funny and well spun by Director John Huston.

TheTimm : 2.5 stars : I thought it was a darned good transfer, but was lacking a bit in the sound quality department. The movie itself, while surprisingly entertaining at times ( the Bad Bob scene comes to mind), isn't something I would have kept watching if it weren't for Paul Newman.

Moby Dick (1956, Action / Ad)

<p><img border="0" src="http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B00005AUKA.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg" align="left" hspace="5"> There are so many things right about this 1956 production of Moby Dick, it's a shame it is remembered for the one (debatable) thing wrong with it. As Captain Ahab, the bearded, one-legged, insanely obsessed whaler, Gregory Peck has often been called miscast. The mild, level-headed Peck had many talents, but the volcanic eruptions of Ahab seemed beyond him--even Peck himself felt he was a bad fit for the part after he finished playing it. (Pauline Kael opined that Peck looked like "a stock-company Lincoln.") Yet Peck's quiet brooding works an intriguing variation on the fiery character. John Huston, a director with a taste for location shooting, had his hands full with the difficult open-water filming in Ireland and the Canary Islands ("The catalogue of misadventures was unbelievable," he later wrote). Since Ahab is chasing the rare white whale, three false whales had to be constructed, two of which were lost at sea. For all the miscues, the film is amazingly controlled, and especially beautiful to look at: Huston and cinematographer Oswald Morris developed an unusual color process meant to suggest old whaling engravings. The director wrote the script with the science fiction writer Ray Bradbury, an inspired choice to adapt Herman Melville's epic novel. Richard Basehart plays the narrator, Ishmael, and Orson Welles provides a wonderful single-scene role as Father Mapple, declaiming the mysteries of the sailor's life in a thundering sermon. --Robert Horton </p>
Starring: Gregory Peck, Richard Basehart Director: John Huston Studio: MGM/UA Video Aspect ratio 1.33 : 1

Voomer Reviews:

Tvlman : 3 STARS - If you've never read Moby Dick here's your chance to experience the story without having to wade through Melville's book. Gregory Peck stars with John Huston directing.

Harper (1966, Mystery)

<p><img border="0" src="http://images.amazon.com/images/P/6300269418.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg" align="left" hspace="5"> Private eye Lew Harper shows up early at the Southern California estate of Elain Sampson. She offers a drink, he declines, "I though you were a detective," she says. "New type," Harper answers. Paul Newman memorably plays that new type in Harper, based on Ross MacDonald's The Moving Target. The first detective film in Newman's then 23-film career (he later reprised Harper in The Drowning Pool), Harper revitalized the genre. Newman's sleuth chews gum fast...and slips out of jams even faster as he unravels a twisted case of kidnapping and murder. William Goldman's (Misery, All the President's Men) clever screen-play throws quips and a parade of LA-LA-Land characters Harper's way. There's a woman of means (Lauren Bacall), a gun-toting attorney (Arthur Hill), a poolside gigolo (Robert Wagner), a boozy ex-starlet (Shelley Winters), a jazz junkie (Julie Harris), Harper's estranged wife (Janet Leigh) and the unholy order of the Temple of the Clouds (led by Strother Martin). Each may possess a clue. Or a bullet for Harper.

Starring: Paul Newman, Lauren Bacall, Julie Harris, Shelley Winters, Arthur Hill Director: Jack Smight Studio: Warner Studios Aspect ratio 2.35 : 1

Farewell, My Lovely (1975, Mystery)

<p><img border="0" src="http://images.amazon.com/images/P/0784011443.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg" align="left" hspace="5"> Of all the Philip Marlowes, Robert Mitchum's in Farewell, My Lovely resonates most deeply. That's because this is Marlowe past his prime, and Mitchum imbues Raymond Chandler's legendary private detective with a sense of maturity as well as a melancholy spirit. And yet there's plenty of Mitchum's renowned self-deprecating humor and charismatic charm to remind us of his own iconic presence. As in the previous 1944 film version, Murder, My Sweet, Marlowe searches all over L.A. for the elusive girlfriend of ex-con Moose Malloy, a lovable giant who might as well be King Kong. In typical Chandler fashion, the weary Marlowe uncovers a hotbed of lust, corruption, and betrayal. Like Malloy, he's disillusioned by it all, despite his tough exterior, and possesses a tinge of sentimentality for the good old days. About the only current dream he can hold onto is Joe DiMaggio and his fabulous hitting streak. Made in 1975, a year after Chinatown (shot by the same cinematographer, John Alonzo), Farewell, My Lovely is more straightforward and nostalgic, but still possesses a requisite hard-boiled edge, and the best kind of angst the '70s had to offer. (By the way, you'll notice Sylvester Stallone in a rather violent cameo, a year before his Rocky breakthrough.) --Bill Desowitz </p>

Starring: Robert Mitchum, Charlotte Rampling Director: Dick Richards Studio: Artisan Entertainment

Tvlman : 3 STARS - Robert Mitchum in two of Raymond Chandler's finest detective stories as P.I. Philip Marlowe. (Note: For some reason they moved the setting of "The Big Sleep" to London.)

The Big Sleep (1978, Mystery)

<p><img border="0" src="http://images.amazon.com/images/P/0784011451.01.LZZZZZZZ.gif" align="left" hspace="5"> Robert Mitchum is back as the legendary private investigator, Phillip Marlowe. This adaptation of Raymond Chandler's classic hard-boiled detective mystery features an all-star cast, including: Richard Boone, Joan Collins, Sir John Mills, James Stewart and Oliver Reed.
Marlowe is hired by a retired general (JAMES STEWART) to find out who has been blackmailing the old man's wild daughters (SARAH MILES and CANDY CLARK). At the same time he has to try to locate the missing husband of one of the daughters. Marlowe's search leads through a dangerous thicket of murder and suicide in the seedy criminal underworld straight to the headquarters of the notorious nightclub owner and gangland boss, Eddie Mars (OLIVER REED). Expert storyteller Raymond Chandler spins a masterful web of deceit, creating an intricate, spellbinding mystery full of bare-knuckle action and heart-pounding suspense.

The Manchurian Candidate (1962, Mystery)

<p><img border="0" src="http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B00000408I.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg" align="left" hspace="5"> You will never find a more chillingly suspenseful, perversely funny, or viciously satirical political thriller than The Manchurian Candidate, based on the novel by Richard Condon (author of Winter Kills). The film, withheld from distribution by star Frank Sinatra for almost a quarter century after President Kennedy's assassination, has lost none of its potency over time. Former infantryman Bennet Marco (Sinatra) is haunted by nightmares about his platoon having been captured and brainwashed in Korea. The indecipherable dreams seem to center on Sergeant Raymond Shaw (Laurence Harvey), a decorated war hero but a cold fish of a man whose own mother (Angela Lansbury, in one of the all-time great dragon-lady roles) describes him as looking like his head is "always about to come to a point." Mrs. Bates has nothing on Lansbury's character, the manipulative queen behind her second husband, Senator John Iselin (James Gregory), a notoriously McCarthyesque demagogue. --Jim Emerson

cyuhnke : stars Frank Sinatra, Lawrence Harvey, and Angela Lansbury star in thriller about brainwashing and McCarthyism. Sinatra's acting is as poor as always, but Harvey and Lansbury are A+.

barth2k : 3.5 stars. Finally saw this classic. It's slow in some places, the cold war theme is a bit dated, but overall a good thriller. Got me curious about the new remake with Denzel Wasjington. PQ is only so so.

deeann : Fantastic movie!

Between this and "Seven Day's in May" I wonder if "Seconds" will be appearing on Voom at some point.

Odys : A true classic. If you haven't seen this movie, make sure you do so before the upcoming Hollywood remake starring Denzel Washington. Who knows, maybe I'll be surprised and the remake will be ok, but I doubt it.

The Towering Inferno (1974, Mystery)

<p><img border="0" src="http://images.amazon.com/images/P/6304342586.01.LZZZZZZZ.gif" align="left" hspace="5"> Disaster movies used to work because there was little certainty as to who would survive. Not so in this film, really an amalgam of two original stories, about a group of well-to-do celebrants at the top floor of a skyscraper. Cheapo electrical wiring and bad construction management cause an enormous blaze at the lower floors, steadily rising to consume the revelers. Newman's an architect, McQueen a firefighter, and Fred Astaire a kind old gentleman, for which he was Oscar-nominated. O.J. Simpson plays a security guard who rescues a cat. Now that's a disaster. --Keith Simanton

Oh, God (1977, Comedy)

<p><img border="0" src="http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B00004STUA.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg" align="left" hspace="5"> Carl Reiner directed this sweet comedy about the Man Upstairs visiting Earth in the form of a funny little guy (George Burns). John Denver is the good man chosen to be God's contact in the modern age--and like an Old Testament prophet, Denver's character pays the price by being ridiculed and faced with criminal charges. Denver is a warm presence, but the film is entirely in Burns's court. Reiner feeds him lines that come out of Burns' mouth like stage patter, and it's no wonder he got a huge career boost from this film in the winter of his life. Except for some courtroom stuff in the third act--where Reiner inadvertently cheapens the movie with editing tricks to suggest "miracles"--Oh, God! is just fine. (It's certainly better than its two perfunctory sequels, Oh God! Book II and Oh God! You Devil.) --Tom Keogh </p>

Starring: John Denver, George Burns Director: Carl Reiner Studio: Warner Studios Aspect ratio 1.85 : 1

Sean Mota : I saw entirely. I would give 4 stars to this movie. A good comedy which I saw before but it was quite good to sit down and watch. HD transfer was very good.

TheTimm : 4 stars : Was surprised by how good it looked and sounded, considering it's from 1977. The movie itself is a classic idea done very well. I thought Paul Sorvino was excellent in his role as a reverend. And Teri Garr was just gorgeous way back when.

Where Eagles Dare (1969, War)

<p><img border="0" src="http://images.amazon.com/images/P/0790752395.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg" align="left" hspace="5"> Scorned by reviewers when it came out, this concentrated dose of commando death-dealing to legions of Nazi machine-gun fodder has acquired a cult over the years. In 1968 Clint Eastwood was just getting used to the notion that he might be a world-class movie star; Richard Burton, whose image had been shaped equally by classical theater training and his headline-making romance with Elizabeth Taylor, was eager to try on the action ethos Eastwood was already nudging toward caricature. Alistair MacLean's novel The Guns of Navarone had inspired the film that started the '60s vogue for World War II military capers, so he was prevailed on to write the screenplay (his first). The central location, an impregnable Alpine stronghold locked in ice and snow, is surpassing cool, but the plot and action are ultra-mechanical, and the switcheroo gamesmanship of just who is the undercover double (triple?) agent on the mission becomes aggressively silly. --Richard T. Jameson

Starring: Richard Burton, Clint Eastwood Director: Brian G. Hutton Studio: Warner Studios Aspect ratio 2.35 : 1

Voomer Reviews:

Sean Mota : War movie (my type of movie). This movie is long so I could not watch it in one sitting. I saw half of it first and then 4 days later I caught the last half of the movie. Quite an impressive HD transfer. You could see that the special effects of War movies at that time where not that great (especially when the soldier drops from the tower. You could see it was a dummy by the way it fell. I wonder whether you could see the same in the SD version). The plot was quite excellent and I was glad to see Clint Eastwood when he was young. I love his movies and would like to see his westerns movies in Cinema 10. I own most of the DVDs. 5 stars I will give this movie.
