Can I add on a receiver myself? I saw a receiver at the thrift store (same one I currently have). What would I need to do to make it active in my house?

Run a line from your dish to the location you want it in.
Turn it on, make sure you have a picture on channel 100 and Call D* to activate.

I do not know if you can activate rec's online or not, I know you can re-hit them online, but not sure if you can activate or not.

What do you have for equipment now? What dish how many receivers any multiswitches?

Is there a balance owed on the receiver in the thrift store?
Is that receiver possibly leased from Directv?
You will have to buy a new access card from Directv before you can activate the receiver.
