Is Welcome Pack History?

Anyone have a channel list for the welcome pack? Does it still include locals?

I have purchased all of my own equipment with the intention of doing a self-install for my mother with a 211K and the Welcome Pack. Does a self-install still require subscribing to another package first and then downgrading to Welcome Pack? Also, can I use a refer a friend from my account to open her account?

To answer your first question: Yes, I have done exactly that before. I was able to get the account switched to Welcome Pack on the same phone call when I opened the account, but others have reported no luck doing that. They were required to call back to downgrade to Welcome Pack.

As for the Refer A Friend, that would require the referred customer to open the new account with a qualifying package and keep that package for at least a month before downgrading to Welcome Pack. So, you would have to decide whether it is worth the extra up-front cost (for the first month of service on the new account) and the hassle of calling back to downgrade to Welcome Pack a month later. Also, I am pretty sure that the Refer A Friend deal requires professional installation of a leased receiver, so there goes your self-install plan. You would probably get a Wally by doing it that way. You might still be able to switch to the purchased 211K later if you wanted to, but then you would have to return the leased Wally.

Hey thanks for all that info!! Just want to be prepared. Having to put off my install for a week or 2 because we've gotten 50 inches of snow over the last 2 weeks. Also my last self install was April 97. I think things have changed a bit since then, but same basic concept.

I was able to create an account for my mother at my house. They made me open it in my name since she was not here, not a problem. We used her address as the service address. They said it would not affect my current account. They made me open the account with the Flex Pack @$56.65, but transferred me (sort of) to a different account specialist to downgrade my package to Welcome Pack @ $22.99. I hope the account is now grandfathered against the new Non-DVR fee that JSheridan said was coming to new subscribers on April 10. I decided to try and connect my purchased VIP211K to port 1 on my own dish, which worked perfectly. The receiver is all activated and working great. So now I can wait until a good weather day this weekend or during the next week to go to her house and install the dish and run the cables and it should be up and running. Thanks again for all the assistance and I would say the Welcome Pack is not history yet. Both CSR's I dealt with seemed to be quite familiar with it and said nothing about it going away.

Good luck with Nor'Easter #4 that is supposed to be heading your way.

Preliminary reports are this one will stay safely south of us we may get 2 to 4 inches or as we call it "a dusting", nuisance snow. I have the receiver activated on her new account, today I formatted a new 2TB Hard Drive and had that activated on the receiver (took over an hour including a tech support call) and I plan to put the dish itself together and be ready to just haul it all to her house and put in place. No need to go through all of that activation nonsense after installing the equipment. She can just watch TV. Looking at all the channels you get in the Welcome Pack, it really is a steal. If only they would trade Fox News for MSLSD I might consider downgrading from 250 package.
