Jazz Trade All-Star point guard Deron Williams to Jersey!

Carmelo who? Nets get Deron Williams! Wow!!!

After Knicks columnists taunted Mikhail Prokhorov for missing out on Carmelo Anthony, everyone's favorite Russian billionaire gets the last laugh. Instead of a months-long saga, the Nets quietly did in a day what the Knicks haven't done in years--traded for a franchise player that makes sense.

As if the Carmelo trade didn't look a little foolish on Tuesday... On Wednesday, Mikhail Prokhorov and the Nets made the Knicks look like full-on losers in all this. To recap: Prokhorov and the Nets got back involved in the Carmelo trade sweepstakes last week, forced the Knicks to give Denver just about every attractive asset they had, and then, when nobody was looking, they went and stole a much better player in Deron Williams.

Can you imagine how good Williams would have been in Mike D'Antoni's system? Well, so can Knicks fans. And if they felt conflicted about the way the 'Melo trade went down on Tuesday, then you can imagine how it feels to watch the real missing piece end up across the river.

The only thing that makes this a possible risky trade is Williams' contract status:

Unlike Anthony, who could opt out of his contract after this season and was allowed under the current collective bargaining agreement to sign an extension with the Knicks, Williams can't opt out until after next season and can't sign an extension until July 2011. The current CBA expires after this season, however, making all contract talk uncertain.

Not really. This summer ('11) he is ellible to sign an extension. His current contract isn't up until the summer of 2012. If he refuses to sign an extension with the Nets next year, trade him just like Denver did with Melo and the Nets will surely get even more in return than what they just gave up.
Like the quote I posted says, a contract extension this summer depends on a CBA being in place. Melo is free to sign his now.

This is a surprise, but should have been done about 3 weeks ago. Maybe Jerry Slone would still be coaching the Jazz.

When are the Nets supposed to move to Brooklyn? They would be the NEW YORK Nets [again] then,or is it that the marquee players have to[want to] play in Manhattan(Madison Square Garden)?

They gave up less, got the Knicks to give up more and ended up with "arguably" a better player.

Don't get caught up in the knee-jerk reaction, HD...you're better than that. The Knicks traded for a guy who wants to be here and is begging to sign a long-term deal with the team. They certainly gave up a lot, but at least they know what they are getting will be around for a while.

If Williams signs long term and is also able to convince another star to come here, it's a good deal for the Nets.

But will the trade still look great if Deron Williams does not sign here after next year? Devin Harris, first round 2010 pick Derrick Favors, and two more first round picks for a guy who may turn out to be a rental for a little more than a year? The first round pick that was sent to Utah this June is NOT lottery protected. Ouch.

The Nets may turn out to be bad next year with or without Deron Williams, so the 2012 first round pick could also turn out to be a lottery pick. TWO lottery picks for the services of Deron Williams for a year and two months? Does that sound great to you?

Time will tell.

There's a lot of assumptions in this above thought.

What are the assumptions? I'm just saying let's wait and see before we proclaim this an amazing trade. It could go one way or the other.

"What assumptions?!" You just made these assumptions in the post I responded to....

1. Jersey is a bad enough team to end up with a lottery pick in 2011.
2. Jersey is a bad enough team to end up with a lottery pick in 2012.
3. Deron Williams not re-signing with Jersey when his contract is up.
4. Jersey front office not gauging Deron Williams interest in resigning. Then if he isn't interested when his contract is up in 2012, Jersey holding onto him instead of trading him before his contract is up, thus blowing any opportunity of gaining significant trade assets in return (ala Utah, Denver, etc).

Look, I think Jersey is pretty much covered either way they go about this. We can dream up of every possible scenario on how this is/isn't a good trade or not, or we can look at it based on what we know today. We can look on it in face value.

The way I look at it is this:

Jersey gave up less and through coyness, got the Knicks to give up more. In return, both clubs got a star player. The Nets got more value in their trade, despite the NY Media absolutely tearing the Nets apart after the 'Melo trade went down.

Either way, both clubs will have to continue to improve in order for any of these trades to mean anything. They are both a gigantic step in the right direction though. Congrats to the NY Metro B-Ball fans!

Well, I said Williams MAY turn out to be a rental for a year and two months. That's not an assumption, that's stating one possible scenario. Am I assuming that will happen? No...I have no idea what Williams will decide to do, and at this point Williams probably doesn't either.

The only thing that is looking pretty good is that the Nets' draft pick this June will likely be a lottery pick. After that, all we can say is we shall see.

But if Williams doesn't sign here, the trade has the potential to be bad.
