I was sick when I heard this. One of baseball's bright young stars, and by all accounts a very good man. RIP, Jose :oldfrown

Sad day in south Florida. Meant MUCH more than baseball to the Cuban American community. He WAS the Amercian dream to many no-Cuban immigrants and symbolized overcoming hardship and making it. And after Wade left to Chicago, he was THE BEST athlete south Florida had. He was THE FACE to south Florida sports.

It will take decades for this community to recover. THAT is how big he was.

Dan Le Batard is often made fun of due to his ESPN show... But there is NO DOUBT his talent writing is beyond compare.

That was a good read from La Batard.

Such a tragedy. Very sad.

Search for more info and you'll see he wasn't driving. Unfortunately it's a common thing down here to be on a boat intoxicated and even drive it. Needs to stop.

I'm sorry but well cocaine, alcohol... yeah if he was driving that boat he murdered his friends plain and simple.
Everyone that felt sorry for him is having a reality check now if they release he was driving that boat.

What reality check is this? What he did for the community is now null and void? What he meant to the Cuban community and their struggles to leave a country they love because of communism is no longer important? IF anything if showed the perils and temptations of having alot of money...at worst. AT BEST, it was ANOTHER lesson about those same perils of what happens when you fall into that life style.

Do we know if he was an habitual drug abuser? We may never know....

Really?
http://www.cbsnews.com/news/marlins-pitcher-jose-fernandez-boat-crash-miami-beach/
Miami Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez was the “probable” operator of a speeding boat that crashed into a Miami Beach jetty on Sept. 25, killing the baseball star and two other men, according to a report issued Thursday by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, which investigated the accident.

CBS Miami reports that Fernandez’s blood ethanol level was between .14 percent and .16 percent, or twice the legal limit. Fernandez and Rivero also had cocaine in their system, according to the Miami-Dade Medical Examiner’s Office report.

“The presence of cocaethylene does confirm that alcohol and cocaine were consumed at the same time, from 15 minutes to 2 hours of most recent use,” the report concludes.

So the search turned up to show he was the "probable" operator by evidence shown in the report - some hero... he is responsible for murder IMO.
