Hello all

I had DTV come to do a simple install... Did not work... What would anyone suggest for longer run, inline amp? RG 11? The install was ok otherwise, just no signal, have done a 400-450 run without problem. Any feedback would help, thank you in advance..

thanks JDspencer

The latest directv oval with three heads, the run is about 760. Not absolutely sure of kind of model, it seems that he installed what seems like two different types of cable. It might just be that he ran out from a prior install..it is out in a field so I would have to go to the field to check.

thanks again...

longer run Dtv 2

So if I get rg11 coax and 5 inline amps spaced at every 150ft, then weatherproof connectors, is this the best revised plan? Can you have to many inline amps? Or would someone recommend a different strategy?

Thanks for the words of advice, you guys know your stuff...

There may be an amp with enough amplification that you may only need one.

Remember, you not only need to amplify the signal but also ensure that the switching voltage is sufficient to switch the LNB..

anyone thoughts

JDSpencer

What should I do to monitor switching voltage is sufficient to switch the LNB.. Is this more equipment?

Thanks again...

Depending on what channel your receiver is set to, you should be getting 13 or 18 volts at the LNB. You can check that with a multimeter. I have no idea what amp you would need for that kind of length.

A key indicator of low switching voltage is when all of your even transponders are zero. This means that the 18v signal is too low to switch the LNB. It will default to the odd TPs.

Good info JD, I forgot about that ... Good idea, this way he'll know ahead of time if he'll need an amp, personally, I would run the RG11 and try that first before spending more money on amplifiers .

OP,
What did D* suggest you do ?

What about 22kHz tone to switch the LNBs? How deep is your wallet 750 ft of RG11 plus fittings and labor has got to be expensive. What is wrong with the previous location at 400-450 ft.? Do you need 99/101/103/110/119 or can you use the single head 99/101/103 which offers all the national programming.

Thanks again everyone for the ideas...

D* tv sent a senior installer out... No joy... He said that we could not get the local channels out of GreenBay and that we would always be fighing with D* tv about lack of service. He did try to go through the woods on the power poles, but would only shorten the run 200 ft. So unless cable company can make something happen, no tv in EB WI... The days of free tv are just about done...

Thanks for sharing your wisdom, heartfelt thanks again...

Which dish do you have? The slimline w/ SWM? the bits about switches and voltages don't apply to a SWM. If you have a switch and a non SWM setup try putting the switch halfway, maybe that will give you enough on both sides to slide under the limit.
