I was really interested in this MAKE-Pi project, but could not round up the display.

I have been researching for a week to find a display that would work, maybe the company that manufactured the display will come back online and manufacture more displays.

Sweet. Geeks On The Air! (Blinded Me With Science?)
I soldered and sweated and got a BA1404 to cover 40 acres.
Had plans to use a delco radio AFC in conjunction to keep drift to less than 1khz, but never finished it.
Be CAREFULL. Not that long ago a Pirate got busted not too far from here. Don't advertise. (or use much power) Think that's what 'blew' it for this one. (they did BOTH!) Citizen vigilante or is it his own? (see pt2)
