During Bryant's interview with the Dolphins, Ireland had the nerve to ask that question. Shocking.

This is a MAJOR story down here. And the thing that really sucks is that ME personally, I would have punched him in his mouth. IF Dez would have done the same thing, they would have portrayed him as some kind of Pac-Man Jones/Michael Vick.

I wonder if Goodell will do anything about THIS?

EDIT: ALSO asked if "she was a still a drug addict"??!!!:eek:

Obviously a classless move by Ireland. Apparently, the intent of the line of questioning was to see what kind of reaction he would get out of Bryant. If that's really the case, why didn't Ireland say so immediately after asking the questions??

Also, it's a clear abuse of power too. Say a few years from now, Bryant has a good career and is a free agent. Would Ireland be asking questions like that when Bryant is holding the cards??

yea i saw this yesterday. very disappointed. i've really liked what fins management has been doing until this point. yes he spoke to Dez and apologized but whats done is done. maybe he was trying to see what Bryant's reaction would be. inexcusable. :down

ahh you beat me to it. yes agreed

I'm not getting the 'see what his reaction would be' thing. What would his reaction prove?

I don't agree with that type of questioning either, but apparently the thinking is to see how a player reacts to a "your momma" moment off the field. I don't see how you can compare someone saying that in a social setting, and someone asking it in a job interview setting.

Trust me, things are said on the field (or the court or the ice) at very competitive levels from the time kids are 12 years old. Extremely nasty, almost illegal things. You would not believe some of the things my nieces and nephews have told us have been said to them (they conveniently leave out what they say back ;)).

Bryant and every other athlete has been dealing with this for years. Nothing he does or says in an interview room would even remotely affect what he does on the field.

What about race questions?? Aren't those normally taboo??

Toby Gerhart talked about one of his interviews:

"One team I interviewed with asked me about being a white running back," Gerhart said. "They asked if it made me feel entitled, or like I felt I was a poster child for white running backs. I said, 'No, I'm just out there playing ball. I don't think about that.' I didn't really know what to say."

These aren't job interviews, they're just interviews. Job interviews allow for protections from discrimination.

Everything will be done to distinguish the Pacman's from the Tebows.

Are you condoning the GM asking Bryant if his mother was a prostitute?

Any other words you want to put in my mouth?

They are interviews, not job interviews. I'm not condoning anything, and don't care about the issue so that's all I was replying to. It's just flame bait for people to tee off on and argue about, it's just a headline and something I don't care about.

Players aren't hired, their rights are owned by those who draft them.

"We need to make sure the men of this league are treated as businessmen," players association chief DeMaurice Smith said in a statement.

"During interviews, our players and prospective players should never be subjected to discrimination or degradation stemming from the biases or misconceptions held by team personnel.

"NFL teams cannot have the free reign to ask questions during the interview process which can be categorized as stereotyping or which may bring a personal insult to any player as a man."

"For the past year, active, former and incoming players have heard me speak about the expectations we have of them as members of this union, their teams, communities and families," Smith said about standards of behavior.

"It is equally true that the same kind of respect is demanded of their employers."

Just for argument sake, what if this guy asked the player something more along the lines of " Do you have any relationships with escorts or call girls?"

Call me dumb, but it sounds like the Gm/idiot was trying to find out if this guy was hanging out, associated with, or however you want to say it, people committing illegal activities.

I get it, he asked him if his momma was a hooker, I mean, wow, really? How do you respond to that?

Go all Jim Everett most likely ;)

If this guy was simply trying to see if the dude has anger issues, or otherwise, why not just put him in front of a shrink or trained professional and see the results?
