Both DirecTV.com and the 800 number explicitly state that a land line is required for all sports packages.

I just talked to Customer Service, who "checked with" someone else, and they say it is not a requirement.

Does anyone know from experience?

Thanks,

One of my boxes right now isn't hookes up to the land line and it receives the sports packages fine. The Directv Tivo boxes are the ones that truly need the landline.
No they don't. My TiVO has not been hooked to a land line for 2 years and everything comes in fine, including updates. I do get the occasional message about it not being able to dial out.

Asked the same question a few years ago....no landline installed in my cabin and have NHL CI mirrored to three receivers. No landline, no problem.
