I recently canceled my Dish Network service and switched to DirecTV. When I did so I was told I would have to return my leased equipment or be subject to being charged full retail price for it.

Today I got an email from Dish Network stating that my equipment was obsolete and I would not be required to return it, I would only have to return the access cards.

My question is, so even though I leased this equipment, since they don't want it back, can I sell it now? Was going to go ahead and list on ebay based on this email, but I don't want it to come back and bite me.

FYI...My "obsolete" equipment consists of a VIP 722 and a VIP 222k, both of which are just over one year old.

Ha, the VIP722 and the VIP222K are hardly obsolete. That said, you are not going to get much for the receivers without the Smart Cards.....

Something sounds really shady here. Are you sure they were referring to your receivers and not to the LNBFs or something? Who did the Email come from. I'd be very worried I was going to get charged for those receivers as they install both of those receivers today still...

TommyF is on his way. :D

o_O I swear he knows something we don't. :D:p

AFAIK as Bobby mentioned the equipment is not obsolete. We did recently add a disclosure saying "If the defective equipment being replaced is identified as obsolete it does not need to be returned." The only other possible reason is if you may have obsolete equipment on the account itself.

I sent you a PM with more information to help figure this out!

If you can PM me the account # I can get you more information if they need to be returned or not.
He only has one post, so PM won't work for him. :D

The email simply confirms my account has been disconnected. It then states both of my receivers are obsolete and here is a direct quote from the email:

A return kit will not be sent for purchased or obsolete equipment; instead, a postage-paid SmartCard return envelope will be sent to return SmartCard(s) for obsolete equipment

I haven't seen the email so unsure exactly how it's meant to look, but it's possible may have been a mistake when generated. I sent you a PM with more exact information, also account specifics like receiver ID's are sensitive information, I would remove them just to be safe IMHO.

This sounds like a standard disclaimer, as in "IF" your equipment is obsolete dish won't send you a box. I don't think they are confirming that your equipment is obsolete. Why don't you post the whole email (obviously remove your account number and name/address). I think you might be taking that out of context.

Yea, definitely do NOT sell them. Those receivers are still very mainstream. I'm installing a 722 here shortly.

If the email is to vague to understand, I'd call a csr to verify

^^ I agree. They are not saying YOUR stuff is obsolete, they are just saying IF your stuff is obsolete, they will not be sending you a return box. I'd bet in a few days you get a box....

Having received a similar email this morning (I ended service on Friday 4/1), This is what the email looks like:

Return Authorization Number: 52468195

Dear James,

Your DISH Network account has been disconnected.

Please review the chart to determine what equipment to return:

Equipment Model* CAID* Ownership Obsolete Return? Receiver ViP722 ======== LEASED No Yes * This information can be found on the label located on the back or bottom of your unit
To help you easily return your equipment, DISH Network is doing the following:

  • You will receive a return kit including boxes and discounted return labels in the next few days.
  • A $15 per label equipment return fee will be charged to your account should you choose to use the labels. This fee is significantly less than rates you are likely to find with UPS, FedEx, or the US Postal Service.
  • A return kit will not be sent for purchased or obsolete equipment; instead, a postage-paid SmartCard return envelope will be sent to return SmartCard(s) for obsolete equipment:
    • ** The following SmartCard removal instructions are for obsolete equipment only. Please do not remove SmartCards from leased equipment:
      • Open the front left door panel on the obsolete receiver
      • Remove SmartCard from the receiver
      • Return SmartCard(s) from obsolete receiver(s) in the envelope being sent to you
To avoid charges, please return your equipment within 10 days. You will receive an e-mail when your equipment has been received.
We recommend that any equipment not returned be disposed of in an environmentally responsible manner. Please visit the EPA website below to locate an electronics recycler near you:

Thank you for being a valued DISH Network customer.

It's not coming out correctly...

I contacted Dish Executive Support by email earlier today and they confirmed that the VIP722 is not obsolete. The email was sent in error.
