I was wondering why I saw Satan walking the streets, shivering uncontrollably.

Of course, I hardly ever use my 508 anymore. Probably ought to sell it and save 5 bucks a month.

Third, how long before MPEG 2 will be obsolete - meaning the 5XX will be unusable? I thought it was about a year from now? Seems like alot of work for a unit that as I understand it will not be usable. (Hope I am wrong about this)

Why do people keep saying MPEG2 is going away? When did DISH ever say this? All the HD is going to be MPEG4, not SD! Sure, there may come a day that any new SD is available only in MP4, but I don't see them switching all SD to MP4 and having to replace all the receivers that are already out in the field.

As to NBR, I'm pretty happy to see this. I still have two 508's that I use and this feature will really come in handy.

Dish does have (long term) plans to move everything to MPEG4, away from MPEG2 and yes, it will also involve swapping out all current MPEG2 receivers.

Anyone think that the reason for the delay in NBR by years was mostly due to the pending patent infringement law suits with Forgernt and TiVo? Since Dish not only won the law suit last month brought by Forgert, but had the patent invalidated and Forgent was forced to pay for court costs due to the frivolous nature of the suit; and the fact that some see TiVo as having a much weaker case, Could Dish be telling TiVo where to put its settlement plans? :) I know this software was pretty much ready to over a year ago. The timing just seems too perfect.
Makes a lot of sense.

The value of the 501/508 receivers just went up. No DVR Fee and now the capability of Name based recording. I think those two receivers will be the only ones without a DVR Fee that will have that NBR. I wonder if they will be able to launch it for the 721?

Engineering plans to spool a PARTIAL PHASE of software version P4.00...
I am having trouble parsing this sentence. I understand "spool" to mean "to queue" the software update. I'm guessing that "partial phase" means the updates are going out in stages. How does one determine which phase one's receiver is in?

You guessed correctly. They go out in batches (partial phase) and right now it's spooling to this range:

A buddy of mine plugged in an old 508 this weekend to re-activate. It was very outdated, hadn't been used in I think 2 years. It downloaded the 400 software on Saturday night.

The info add's an extra line(box) at the bottom with an original air date, not like with is on the 625/622 receivers. I can get some screen shots tonight if you want.

When you go to set a timer the default was ONCE and not All Episodes!!

I don't know how the 50x or 510 DVRs worked at all, but newer DVRs will default to different settings based on the show type. A series will default to "All episodes"; a movie or sporting event defaults to "Once".

Hmm you could be right. He was setting timers for a couple movies on HBO and Max.

IIRC, Dish announced way back that NBR would not be coming to the 721. What a shame. I'd get more use out of it on my 721 than I would on my 508.

That would be pretty awesome if you could do some screenshots and post it for all to see. Can ya?

I had an unused 510 sitting around for years, I finally gutted it for the 120 gig HD and threw away the case. They weren't going for much more on ebay than the cost (at the time) of a 120 gig HD and the minimal profit wasn't worth it. NBR is nice but even if I still had it I wouldn't have activated it just for that. One thing I will say about the 5XX's is that their pausing/resuming was a lot cleaner that any current model, no stuttering, very smooth.

Save $5/mo

But PM me a price and I may buy it. :)

I could use the extra disk space. My 501 stays near the full mark. I just cannot get the stuff onto DVD as fast as it records. When you only want 5-10 minutes of a 30-60 minutes broadcast it suck using up the extra space.

As for NBR, I couldn't care less. I'm hoping some of the other 50x software bugs of the 3.xx releases are fixed though.

Isn't there an extra receiver fee of $5 per month? I guess I need to read my bill. I have a 508, 721 & ViP622.
