Why can't the dish receiver record two streams from one tuner?

The data is already flowing to the CPU and being recorded to a file with the first recording.

So, when it comes time to start the second recording on the same channel, why can't the system just start writing the second file at say 1 minute before the hour and the first file continues recording until 3 minutes after the hour.

The data for the overlap is already being captured, why can't it be saved in two files, one about to be terminated and the other having just begun?

This would free tuners from having to cover the overlaps and make the DVR more flexible.

TiVo does that, but perhaps it is patented...

You took the words right out of my mouth.Remember,Dish settled with Tivo,in that settlement they paid for licensing rights for features like that.I don't know why on earth they won't use them again. The dvr functions were much better prior to the tivo workaround that dish implemented.Perhaps Dish has a bad taste in their mouth from the Tivo litigation,or perhaps they truly believe their s/w is superior.
