Newly named Pitt football coach Mike Haywood was arrested this afternoon after the mother of his 21-month-old child told police he "held her in a choke-hold" and pushed her during a domestic dispute, St. Joseph County police said.

Mr. Haywood was charged with domestic battery and lodged in the St. Joseph County, Ind. jail after the incident, which began unfolding about 2:30 p.m. central time at his home on Hawthorne Meadow Drive in South Bend. Officers were called there for a "domestic violence situation" in which the woman said Mr. Haywood had choked and assaulted her, Assistant police chief William Redman said.

When officers had separated her from Mr. Haywood, she told them she was "trying to leave the house with the child and he didn't want her to leave," Mr. Redman said. "Thats when the verbal turned physical."

He wouldn't disclose the woman's name but described her as a "girlfriend." He wasn't sure if she had been living in the home with Mr. Haywood.

"What their relationship is is kind of unclear right now," he said.

She told officers Mr. Haywood held her in a choke-hold and pushed her. Officers said they could see red marks on her neck, arms and back.

"That's the physical evidence to what she claimed," Mr. Redman said.

They better fire him, it really is hard to be a Pitt fan.

Doesn't look good considering police reported seeing signs of abuse:

Good role model for players (sarcasm) . . . fire him . . . this is an insult to what Wannstedt has done for that team

AMAZING that this school did not do the proper homework. ESPECIALLY in this day in age with all of the technology easily available.

By reading.

What he SAID:

Mr. Pederson stressed the Panthers' need for discipline off the field and was looking for a coach who he believed would bring it to the program and he was impressed by Mr. Haywood's system of discipline and strict rules.
Mr. Haywood spoke of early morning practices, players wearing sports coats and ties to away trips, no jewelry or hats and zero tolerance for missing academic commitments or tardiness for team functions.

Pederson emphasized Haywood would be a “role model” for Pitt's players, most of whom wanted Wannstedt retained following seasons of nine, 10 and seven wins.
But Haywood's introductory press conference, in which he never mentioned the word winning but repeatedly emphasized that his players would be disciplined, dress properly and attend class, was met with a lukewarm response.

What he DID:

Got a girl a generation younger than him who he was not married to pregnant when he was 44. A known fact long before this happens. Don't play the "responsibility and role model" card and then hire some guy who spreads his seeds freely.

Keep it zipped.

Pederson should be fired for hiring this guy. I'm not saying they should of kept Wannstedt, he couldn't win the big game and he can't recruit a good QB. Tom Bradely supposedly called three times wanting a interview and his calls were never answered by Pederson. You don't hire a MAC coach to win championships, you hire MAC coaches to keep the payroll down.

Time to fire Pederson next, 11 recruits have turned down their letter of intent.

Agree 100%.

Bad fire. DW did plenty at Pitt. The Leastleftovers is become a coach killer conference. Not because its hard, but because its so easy. ADs and boosters look at the joke level of competiton and realize how easy it would be to dominate and get impatient, not realizing they are one of the cupcakes themselves. UK would have gone undefeated in this year's Leastleftovers.

Bad hire. Some joker from Miami, not the real one, the one in Ohio, who had a good year in the MAC. Working cheep. The MAC? Please.

Looking stupid. Plays the "role model" card, thus taking a shot at DW, who is married to his children's mother. Alumni, family man, churchgoer, decent person. Not saying anything that you need to be those things to coach football, but don't take a shot at the ex-coach by playing the "values" card when you hire somebody like this.

Pitt is one bad hire from being Cincinnati or Louisville in football. This was that hire. The get a do-over. They need the right guy to do the do-over.

Excuse me ?
Do you realize the long list of successful MAC coaches that have gone on to much larger and productive careers ?

Woody Hayes
Bo Schembechler
Ara Parseghian
Nick Saban
Urban Meyer
Gary Pinkel
Ron Zook

These come to mind off the top of my head

Granted there are great coaches that come from the MAC but they have proven themselves before leaving to better schools. I should of made that clearer in my original post.:o

What ever happened to "innocent until proven guilty." Now days it's "guilty until proven innocent." People seem to want to jump the gun on things like this so they can remain policitaly correct. Wait until the out come of the trail, if innocent, fine keep him, if guilty fire him. Pittsburgh dropped the ball on this one.

I agree to a certain extent, but as the old saying goes....perception is everything. In this case, where PITT may have dropped the ball is thoroughly checking his background. IF the perception is right....they look terribly inadequate for not thoroughly checking his background....IF they were wrong in the perception, they look horrible in knee-jerk reaction they have taken. No one wins in this situation.

The whole problem IMO is Pitt not doing a thorough background check, they really messed this up and the AD needs to be fired, the coach they hired deserved to be fired, only a week into the job and he gets arrested, what kind of picture does that show to the kids when he was preaching discipline and honor in his press conference. They both deserve to be fired.

If he is innocent than he'll be able to find another job somewhere.

Todd Graham Named Head Football Coach at the University of Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH--Widely regarded as one of the finest offensive coaches in the country, Todd Graham today was named the head football coach at the University of Pittsburgh by Athletic Director Steve Pederson. Graham will be formally introduced at a news conference on Tuesday, January 11.

Graham comes to Pitt after a highly successful head coaching tenure at Tulsa, where in four years he had three 10-win campaigns and three bowl victories. He compiled a 36-17 overall record with the Golden Hurricane, including a 10-3 mark this year highlighted by a 28-27 victory at Notre Dame and decisive 62-35 win over 24th-ranked Hawai'i in the Sheraton Hawai'i Bowl. Tulsa's win over Notre Dame was called the biggest upset of the year by ESPN's Kirk Herbstreit.

Prolific offenses have been Graham's hallmark. Under his direction, Tulsa led the nation in total offense twice (2007 and 2008) and ranked fifth this year. While he has a well-deserved reputation for devising high-octane offensive game plans, the 46-year-old coach built his career on defense and has also distinguished himself as a defensive coordinator and position coach.

This will be Graham's third collegiate head coaching appointment. In addition to Tulsa, he served as the head coach at Rice for one season (2006), leading the Owls to their first bowl game in 45 years and earning Conference USA Coach of the Year honors. Graham's career head coaching record is 43-23 and includes four bowls in five seasons.

"We are thrilled that Todd Graham has agreed to become the head football coach at the University of Pittsburgh," said Pederson. "His innovative, creative and energized approach to football makes him an exciting leader for our program. He has a proven track record of success at all levels of football and his wealth of experience on both sides of the ball gives him a unique set of credentials.

"The outstanding job he has done at Tulsa - double-digit win totals in three of the past four seasons and an undefeated bowl record - has been noticed across the country. I know he is excited to meet his new team and the great people of Pittsburgh."
