Anyone know if the soon to be released SONY HD-DVRs (DHG-HDD250 and the DHG-HDD500) work with DirecTv or are they just for those unfortunate cable subscribers? I do think the feature with these units of NOT having to subscribe to TiVo is a good thing.

boba is correct, unfortunately no DIRECTV service on these new Sony DVR's.

Of course, you could connect the "S" video or composite video/audio, RCA Yellow/Red/White connectors in to the input of the new Sony DVR form a DIRECTV SD STB.

Correct! These are NOT all-in-one boxes.

Specifications
High-definition-capable digital video recorder with 500 GB storage: 60 hours of HD programming or up to 400 hours of standard content
Includes NTSC and ATSC tuners; a perfect match for bringing off-air HDTV reception to HD-ready televisions and monitors
Pause, rewind, and record live high-definition TV; record one program while watching another; HDMI/component-video outputs
CableCARD slot accommodates digital cable decoder cards; Memory Stick PRO media slot lets you enjoy digital photos and MP3 music

Is the one (Philips I believe costing just under a grand) the only one available for recording HD programming via DirecTv?

The SOny is how much, cable tuner ????/hmmm directv has really been bad lately, and as for customer service well thats a whole other problem.
