NFL Blacked-Out Games

The real issue is if people don't have the expendable income to go see the games, then perhaps the league should contemplate lowering the ticket prices?? I know, I'm crazy... but if the fans that could afford the tickets, no longer can afford them... does it make sense to assume that the fans that had to rely on the tv broadcasts will be able to afford a high speed internet connection, premium pay tv service (i don't think red zone is in any "basic" cable packs), or (for crying out loud) sunday ticket?

This was discussed in the NFL thread, so will just copy my response from there...

re: just flat out lifting blackouts as if it's some kind of charity to people having problems in this economy...

All that would do is hurt clubs that are already having money problems, has nothing to do with relating to customers, they need to fill the seats, not give people more reason not to attend the games.

The value of the teams themselves on average stayed the same but some teams took a big hit to their net value this year... the Raiders for example are down 7% which is pretty rough news for an owner who's been discreetly selling off chunks of his franchise.

Lame idea. With highlights and all, why bother. Maybe one day they will move to a pay per view system. Game is blacked out, but if you want to see they game you have to pay to watch?. The blackout rules in in todays time does not make much sense to me

Some people will avoid the news and watch the games. What do you propose? These teams are all individual businesses that need to also sustain themselves as well in this economy.

The Jaguars are already taking steps to try and avoid all 8 of their home games being blacked out and a handful of others are looking at being blacked out for the first game and are working toward getting those final tickets sold today to prevent it.

I think all the blackout rules are stupid anyways. If they need the money so bad, then get rid of the NFL ticket concept and just put the games on PPV.

If the game is not blacked out, you watch it. If its blacked out, then you pay like $4.99 or something and you can watch it on the spot on an individual basis

I'd expect it to be closer to UFC prices. People would need to be persuaded even more to go to the games with such an easy out. Blackouts exist to protect the investment television, teams, and the league puts into different aspects of the sport.

I was thinking something along the lines of this too, but I don't think the NFL will put out a $5 price tag.

I think meStevo is more on track with price range unfortunately.

A bar would have to pay something like $500-1000 I bet. 100 people in there at what ticket prices are these days, the NFL will look at it like what if those 100 people all bought tickets to the game and how much they would make.

And at $1000 its a deal for 100 people to watch the game. $10 per person basically.

Think of it this way, lets say they charged 39.99 for a game that's blacked out. Now you, your dad, son, wife, and a buddy or two watch the game.

That's a bargain on a per person level prices and that's why I can see the NFL charging $40-$60 per game.

What this online replay reminds me of, is the NFL Network Replay, where they replay like 4 games of the week. I mean coming out at midnight is stupid but I'll take it. The games are on the next day to watch.

Yeah I watch the Lions, I love the them, I hate them, I can't live without them. What can I say, they're my team. I just can't bring myself to divorce them, cause I don't love any other team...

This would lead down to a very slippery road. Some already forecast the future of the NFL will be all pay-per-view based. Your proposal would speed up the NFL implementing this.

Well as long as Sunday Ticket doesn't black out games I will be fine.

They better not. I am paying extra for those games.

According to wiki....

NFL Sunday Ticket is subject to the same blackout rules as broadcast networks.

Meaning if you are a Bengals fan in Cinci and your team doesn't sell out, even though you have Sunday Ticket, the Bengals game will still be blacked out.

:) My response from the NFL thread.

2008 was the 3rd most profitable year ever for NFL clubs. The average enterprise value for a club is over $1 Billion. They charge $8 for a beer.

It seems like they could still afford a little goodwill towards their customers who are *actually* struggling. The owners & players are still doing just fine.

Oh well.....at least they're doing *something* for the fans....

This is a good idea.

No that's NOT a good idea.

The ST IS ppv. already.

I can't watch it with out paying for it.

NFL on television - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

All games have been available IN HD for the last several years now, but the SD version has been blacked out, as they want you to watch it on the network channel.
But thats not exactly the Black out rule, that's coverage of home Network games in general.
