Oh boy.. Here comes that merger talk again...

Prices should be lower with a merger, since all the people switching back and forth to get new customer deals would disapear , which would cut both sat companies cost significantly.;)

Yea right. Those benevolent nice folks who run the company are just gonna give back all that profit? I wonder why they don't do that now with the billions of profit they've made already? Probably because it will go to the share holders just like those higher profits that would naturally come from elimination of the competition. IMHO a merger would be a very, very bad idea.
 
If you go by the analogy of what is happening in music and book publishing, the networks represent publishers and cable and satellite providers are analogous to book or record stores. In the not so long term they are in serious trouble unless they can manage to provide some sort of value added to the content they sell as people go directly to the content producers or sites such as Amazon where people can get what they want completely ala carte.

Problem is, they likely will never be able to get everything they want.
