Panasonic Launch DX900 4K LED TV & UB900 UHD BD Player

I will be waiting for the Oppo and hang onto the Samsung until then. It seems that both the Panasonic and Philips are converting the 10 bit signal to 12 bit which in turn needs to be converted back to 10 bit. That should be a no-no. The Samsung correctly outputs the 10 bit signal as should the Oppo. Maybe Sony will have a release date by the time Oppo is scheduled to come out.

What is an Oppo?

Unless something glaring comes up, I like the Xbox S and Philips, so Oppo will be hard pressed getting a sale from me, especially if Sony keeps pumping out good players with excellent streaming services. I imagine they will have theirs at CES, plus the PS 4.5 announcement coming up.

Xbox S needs polish, but as a HTPC it rocks.

As far as the 12 bit deal, the 900 has gotten great reviews from technical sites like HDTVTest (David Mackenzie), so I am not sweating it. I liked the Samsung, but I had two, both of which had micro stutters during playback and the red smear issue.

I also have the K8500. While I've had no issues with it I prefer the UB900 the build quality is better and no red smear issues. The Sony UHPH1 is an amazing player as well. If only it did UHD.

I decided to give it a try. I am having difficulty with it keeping the 4K Netflix titles showing. Never had this problem with the Samsung which is now in the bedroom. No VUDU. Might wait to see what ROKU announces.

For some reason my images all show as red x's, yet when I got to edit, I can see them...

I am starting to wonder if it is going to take a player plus something like a Roku, which isn't encouraging. I liked the Philips but swapped it out because not having Amazon ended up being an irritation.

I dont think I have ever seen a device have an issue keeping up with showing 4K on the Netflix app, so that is odd for sure.

My AC is out so I won't be testing anything right now lol.

Roku can do the same thing with NF, especially if it has not been used for a while. Amazon does not do this. I was still able to see available Prime titles when NF wasn't showing.

Fixed image links above.

So far I like the menu system and love the remote. Obvious to me the Philips is a cousin of this thing looking at menu's. For some reason even when I select my 5ghz network, it still only connects to the 2.4ghz one.

Oppo support is tops. When I had a disc loader problem, well outside of warranty, they fixed it free. And there are reports that this is not uncommon.

No high price usability issue. Push the eject button on the player or remote, just like any other player, and the disc tray opens.

Observations:

  • Spears and Munsil 1080p test patterns look great, best fine chroma rez results coupled with my display from any player. Others had some darkening in the fine patterns which shows clipping. Not sure why, but the Panny actually looked how it should look and used to with my Oppo 103D and Blu-ray.
  • Disc drive seems very quiet to me. Testing in a room with no AC on or sound.
  • DD+, TrueHD and MasterHD all output as expected.
  • Youtube worked as expected.
  • Netflix and Amazon were straightforward, Stranger Things looked great, the Netflix app was VERY fast, and Amazon ramps up to 1080p HD swiftly and looks great.
  • I tried all the button pushes I could find and could not get the debug menu on Netflix, and don't really get that since the Philips had it.
  • When hitting the video settings button during playback, I went into the menu and oddly noticed that Noise Reduction and Sharpness had some controls away from 0 (+2). I put them all to 0.
  • Very class player, reminds me of my BDT500 that just worked and had an excellent image, albeit slightly overpriced. PHL has another winner it seems.

Other players don't force the front panel open and leave it open. I assume you have to close it manually and if you want to access the USB or flash slots, you have to open the whole front panel as well.

You assume wrong. When the drive closes the panel closes. Who uses a USB drive anymore? Just use a low profile drive.

I couldn't imagine it being so untidy. The fourth photo in gadgtfreek's post #28 shows the front panel laying down with the tray closed.

How do you open it to access the slots? Is it simply spring loaded or do you have to go through the eject process?
