Please help! I have a client that has had three bad Comcast high def boxes in row. They work for a while and 'blow up'. Is there some inherent flaw? Please, all feed back is appreciated!

I've had 8 HD boxes exchanged because after a few days of operation, one of my local HD channels reverts to a crappy analog output and can only be fixed by exchanging the box. Of course it's my favorite channel!!
I've had two techs here on service calls and big promises, new cable from the pole to the box but no help yet.

Lots of problems with Comcast DVR boxes. Both the Moto and SA boxes have quirks. If its a Moto box, make sure to keep it turned on all the time. :)

Thanks for the reply.
Does this apply to the regular high def boxes also or is it just the DVR?

My pleasure. Btw: The word you were looking for was advice.
Advise is what I didn't do. Advice is what I failed to give.
Excelent, another web site wear people hang out and correct uther peoples gramar. Im not hear for english lessens just had a question about comcast boxes.

thanks again fer the advise :D

I used to have a SA HD8000 HDTV PVR and it had some problems with audio drop outs and freezing out the remote operation until rebooted . I have since upgraded to the newest SA HD8300 and have no issues so far...

I have always believed in renting these products for that very reason .

I have added an external SATA Maxtor 7200 rpm 250GB in a StarTech alluminum box with special cable and effectively doubled my recording capacity..:) see info below -

Think your over reacting a bit Porno, hehe. You said thx and he said your welcome. As for the spelling correction I think he was just trying to be nice and point out a typo if you wanted to fix it. He wasnt, as far as I can tell, nasty or anything. I'm guessing that maybe english is not your 1st languge (no insult intended if it is) and really thats all you had to say if the case.

Now then, on to your question. I have heard a few reports of funky comcast boxes. So far Ive been lucky with the 6412 I have. One thing I would ask you is do you use a surge protector? I mean the "burning" comment makes me wonder if somehow your power is surging/spiking for some reason on occation and without a surge protector it would run right into the box and possibly burn something out. If your not using one you really should give it a try.

I've often heard people saying to keep the 6412 powered on all the time. Personally, I turn mine off at night. No issues at all after powering up, except once the audio was cuting in and out. A simple power off/on cured it.

I think that heat is the major culprit with these units, as it is with the Dish 721. I used to hear all the time about 721's dying. I removed the cover for better cooling, and almost never had a problem, other than some usual Dish bugs.

I notice the 6412 also gets pretty hot. So, I'll bet that a lot of these failures are also heat-related. That is why I prefer to shut her down when not being used.

Shut off of DCT-6412

Both my old DCT-6412 and its replacement, shut off when the TV is shut off. I have to remember to stand there and to manually turn the box back on. With the first box, if I forgot to turn the box back on manually, it would record image with no sound if it woke itself up for a scheduled recording. I don't know if the new box (which in all other aspects, works like a charm) has this problem (because I have not yet forgotten to manually turn it back on....just a matter of time though LOL)
