Hi everyone. I asked this question on nthe Dishnet forum and never seen such rude ppl in my life. :( NO ONE would take the time to answer my question even though over 39 read it. So i thought maybe you guys might be able to help me. Iam very new to satellite and currently have voom which i do love, but may not be around by the end of this month, so i need to be exploring my options. I have a HDtv so of course i would want to purchase the HD receiver and DVR. My question is is it worth it to get direct tv as opposed to dish net?? I was wondering if there is really a great difference between the two. Thanks

1. D* has better receivers (waiting on reliability info once they control the branding for a year or two)
2. D* has better programming bar far if you need sports (NFL & March Madness Exclusive & in HD) They both have the other majors.
3. If you do not need sports then they are 99.999% the same all the way around.
4. Customer service always depends on who you get and on what day; so they are basically the same.
5. D* seems to have a better program in place for the future; quicker to implement too and YES they take care of OWNERS.
6. Comparing packages on a channel to channel basis the prices are so close there is little difference.

Make sure your locals are on both if you are looking for those and I also do not like the RENTAL programs which also leads me away from E*.

You can subscribe to porn, sorry adult programming, by the month on E*, on D* only the Playboy channel is by the month. ;)

Thanks guys for your imput. Iam an NFL fanatic so thats why i have been leaning towards Direct tv for their NFL sunday ticket...I have till the end of the month to see what happens with Voom so hopefully that will be enough time to save the money to switch to Direct tv.

Well if you want the NFL and haven't ever been with D* than I suggest you wait until closer to the start of the NFL season even if that means going with cable for a few months and here is why.

Firstly D* will be offering an HD DVR for both a rental and purchase options and if things go well they might also have their home media server out before the start of the NFL season and that will also be offered as both a rental and purchase option. Now all new HDTV channels including NFL Sunday Ticket HDTV games this year will require new MPEG4 hardware that isn't out yet and even though D* will replace customers hardware for free if they are going to rent it why pay 300 or more upfront for an HDTV box.

Also every single NFL Sunday Ticket game will be broadcast in HDTV this coming season. Also D* will offer the top 12 markets HD local channels as part of their locals package at no extra charge and if their new satellite launch goes well than they should have the top 30-50 markets HD local channels by years end.

I also suggest you wait because if you would be a new customer they offer their best deals about two months before NFL season starts for new D* customers who buy the NFL Sunday Ticket package. I'll tell you what offer they had last year.

Now to start if you were a first time NFL Sunday ticket customers who didn't get this promotion you would most likely buy the early bird special which was last year 200 dollars for the whole NFL season. So with that said as a new customer last year you have to pay upfront the regular price for the ST package which was 250 dollars for the season. But if you did that they gave you four free months of their premier package which was a 360 dollar value (90.00/month times 4 months) so I would expect a similiar offer this coming year.

Now those type offers are only good for first time customers so don't screw yourself out of that by going three or so months before.

If you have any questions please ask anyone here.

I don't mean to sound rude asking this, but why would you need to SAVE money to switch? You can get a multi-room (4 rooms) & install for FREE from http://www.valueelectronics.com/directv_sys.htm just mention you are a member here. Ask for Robert / 5 rooms=$50 - 6 rooms=$100

Scroll down about 1/2 way and remember to add S/H

Well i meant i needed to save money to switch to pay for the HD Direct TV receiver because the receiver is $1000...Thats alot of money to me. But i will sure miss all those HD channels from Voom though :river

What i meant was i needed to save the money to purchase the HDTV receiver with DVR which is close to $1000. Thats alot of money to me right now. I don't care about the promotion of 2 receivers because i only have a small one bedroom apartment anyways with one tv.

WOW, that is a good deal. I wass hoping Direct tv would start renting boxs rather then pay almost $1000 for theirs to get HD with DVR....Thats what i was sweating out.

I high suggest you wait than for both the new customer offer and for the rental. Now in the rare event that the HD DVR doesn't come out before the NFL season I would still take advantage of the NFL offer without HD first but I highly doubt that would come into play.

Dish does 1920x1080i or 1280x720p on all HD channels. D* downrezzes all 1080i HD to 1280x1080i. Thats the biggest difference in terms of HD. D* is missing 640 lines of resolution on some of its material. If you have a RPTV that does 1600x1080i go with Dish.

That is indeed true but when the switch to MPEG4 occurs that will change and I've been told that all current HDTV channels will be back to normal resolutions before the end of the year and most likely before the start of the NFL season. Now again that is what they said now whether they do what they say is another story to tell.

I had dish, went to Direct, now Im moving back to Dish.

Here are come pros for Dish so you get both sides of the story to compare.
===========
Scott Top 10

1-I cant find anything on the guide, the channels are not grouped.

2-There are no favorites lists, with Dish you can have one for each person in the fam.

3- The tivo guide is the slowest in the world you wait all the time with the hour glass also, even with the software upgrade

4- there is no up down browsing in the full screen

5- there is no pic in the guide on tivo

6- there is no lease option, with Direct I do not have to buy a $700 HD Tivo, dish its $5 a month, plus the "setup fee" or down payment of $250

7- you cant lease a SD Tivo, Dish has a $5 a month lease which is less than cables $15 for a DVR lease.

8-There is NO home media solution yet, the Dish 522, 645, and 945 models all have 2nd remotes with dual tuners so you can watch live or recorded shows anywhere in the house.

9- Direct charges $5 extra per room, with Dish and the 522, 645, and 945 there is no extra charge for the 2nd room.

10- But most of all , I cant find anything on the Tivo Guide, the print is too small, and its not in order, they even slip shopping channels in between everything.

Rumor is that if you lease with Dish you will get free upgrades to Mpeg4 boxes.

I have my Tivo on Ebay right now for $50, I will be selling my HD Tivo for $400 in a few weeks.

I guess its all just person preference, I tried Direct, now Im going back.

Another difference between DTV and Dish: Dish Network provides the superstation package. DTV does not think it's fully legal and will not provide their customers this valuable package that DTV subscribers really want. That in my opinion is a major difference.

Not me. I had it for a couple of months when I had E* and cancelled it, nothing on it that I wanted to watch.

Also every single NFL Sunday Ticket game will be broadcast in HDTV this coming season.

LonghornXP,

I've seen you mention this a couple times recently, and I really hope that is true! Have you heard for sure that CBS will be able to do all their games in HD? Last season they only did up to 3 HD games a week.

Chris

This coming season both CBS and Fox will broadcast all of their games in HDTV and both CBS and Fox have mobile trucks and sponsers lineup and I'll give you one guess who might be sponsering the fox and cbs hdtv broadcasts.
