Hey Guys, New-B here and need a little help..... By the way I've enjoyed the forums so far, very informative.... My question is, I am a huge fan of tailgating and need to put together a good portable dish setup for my Saturday game day tailgating..... Any ideas on where I can purchase a complete portable dish setup? I would like to be able to get all locals and all HD programming that I currently have.... So I guess I will need at least a 3 - 5 LNB dish with tri-pod?

The equipment I currently have is as follows:
DirecTV H20 HD Reciever
21" Flat Screen HD TV

Thanks,
Big Otis

While it can be done, its going to be very hard.... Aiming that sucker is not like a regular dish. Because to the KA band frequencies that dish needs to be spot on.

Aiming a Slimline Dish is not for most folks, even pro installers still have a hard time with it as it is that exact.

Wheww not good, so what is my best bet here? Do I need to just stay SD with a single or dual LNB with standard dish? Man. I'm at a loss, because I've seen several people running HD at there tailgating setups?

Also, what can I buy to help me with the dish pointing and setup? Forgive me if this sounds stupid or anything but like I said I am a New-B. I just hate the old trial and error method I have been using.

Thanks Guys,

Big Otis

Check with others to see what they are using. a regular 1LNB dish would be best and would give you the SD versions of the games and is the easiest to setup.

Big: you can find the newest SL3 on ebay for ~$70 BUT, my experience in 5 yrs. of tailgating is that HD is not worth it. With my 18"round dish and 32" Vizio (you're only doing 21") I get great images. PLUS... most of the time, you're battling some sunlight and the general mayhem (at least around our RV during the tailgate) and it would be a pain. I know Matt says that it's not that hard to align and I trust that for him, that's true. When you go HD you're talking about more wind resistance, a larger mast, a mor difficult alignment effort, etc. etc. I can set mine up and have images in 2 minutes (honest!)
I'm giving you my experience and advice, PARTICULARLY when you're only using a 21" flatscreen. If you get to say, 37-50 inches then yes, do HD. You may be able to see a difference on your setup but you'd have to be close and study it. Have Fun and tip a cold one for me... I know we do!

Hey Cincy, thanks man.... So with all this said, in your opinion, should I just stay with a single LNB Satandard Definition setup? If so, where can I get one of those SD single LNB dish? And I tell you what, I will tip the first tailgating bud light to you for all your help.

Thanks Man,
Big Otis
Oh yeah, Roll Tide!

They're all over ebay for $30 or less. You might try your local craigslist too. I have one but shipping would be more than it's worth. BE SURE you have your mast totally plumb. We all recommend that you do a dry run in your backyard and get all your setting correct so that all you have to do at the tailgate is rotate to your correct compass mark.

What dish does one need to get local channels in SD?

Is one of the old round single LNB dishes adequate?

Or do you need the 18" oval 3 LNB dish?
