I remember some of us got an e-mail that said that local channels where coming soon. Included with it was a box with future National HD Channels. I saw this list again I thought this list would be helpful in having an idea on what is soon to come. I have checked off the one's that are already up, and have marked green around the ones that where at that time said to be coming soon. Scott has mentioned MTV, CMT, and VH-1 as coming very soon. This email would confirm this.:up

This is actually an old list. HBO 2 HD is already available too.

The current runor is some ViaCom channels will be coming in HD "soon". Spike has not been mentioned and is the only HD vhannel from Viacomm I actually watch even a little.

AMC and IFC are Rainbow channels which also own Voom. Dish and Voom are in the middle of legal wrangling so I don't see these coming any time until that is settled.

I wouldn't understand why AMC would ever be HD...They are old classic movies most of the time. Alot of Black and White. thats some high quality HD there...not that some of them movies are bad, but just funny that a classic movie channel would be HD considering that HD wasn't even a dream when most of the movies were produced (shot). Bill

My understanding is that movies being produced on film have a higher native resolution than current HD. So just because a movie is old, doesn't mean that a high quality HD transfer can't be made.

EDIT: It's the old tv shows that were recorded on tape that we have to worry about.

Huh? You do know that film stock, even "back in the day", has a much higher effective resolution than 1080p, right? Some of the old De Mille epics would actually be pretty cool in HD.

Disappointment would arise when many of the old movies prior to the mid 60's would still be 4:3, the way they were shot, matte boxed.

Voom channels Kung Fu, Monsters and FilmFest Cinemax have shown older B&W movies in HD. And let me tell you, they look gorgeous! Cinemax and HDNet Movies have done this as well. I think HDNet Movies recently had "Dr. Strangelove- or How I Stopped Worrying and Leaned to Love the Bomb" on and it was GREAT!

However most pre 1960 movies and ALL pre 1950s movies were shot in 4x3 so some of these channels, especially the ones aimed at women* would use stretch-o-vision and ruin any sort of advantage to the PQ.

(*Not a sexist remark. An observation. Channels mostly aimed at women use stretch-o-vision. Channels aimed at men usually do not.)

I own Casablanca on HD DVD. It's 4:3 B&W HD, and it blows away everything on Dish's HDlite visually.

Back on topic--I'm surprised the Viacom stuff is taking so long. I guess they're arguing over money, etc. I have mixed feelings as the HD simulcasts of BET, VH1, CMT, Spike and MTV are all upconvert channels. I wish Dish would settle with Fox and Rainbow to bring IFC, AMC, Voom (maybe) and We, but I know that will be awhile.

Don't forget that two excellent series (Mad Men and Breaking Bad) are shown on AMC and they would be great in HD.

If you want to know what Black and White HD looks like, just turn down your color levels on your TV. Pretty cool. Or hook up a DTV box to an old black and white set. I did this at my parents house for a small 9inch set in the workshop.

Actually the current Viacom negotiation may be more about packaging (which of course in the long term means money) - placement and which channels get added. Viacom has been splitting and refocusing their channels lately.

The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence in HD (I think it was on a VOOM, but not sure) was great.

I REALLY don’t care about MTV OR VH1 in HD! Don’t care about that channel since late 90s.. They don’t play music videos anymore, just bunch soft core porn's reality shows, who cares… is call MTV not RTV..just bunch horny kids & JR-highschooler watching it because of nudity!
But I upgrade from top200 to top250 programs and lately loves the “CHILLERTV” CH199, plays old school series like Friday the13, tells from the crape, night gallery, and so on and on… all good old series and movies in 70s & 80s/90s..And cant wait be gets it IN HD in October. ONLY wish was UNCUT. And don’t know why is NOT, because u have the upgrade to very higher programs to get it! That’s weird.. But is great channel! Anyway I always hunger for more HD channels .:)

I'm ready for Fuse HD. I know it's not coming any time soon though because I'm sure a lot of people here have little interest in it. I wouldn't mind a nice alternative to MTV HD and VH1 HD that are upcoming.

Young Frankenstein and the previously mentioned The man who Shot Liberty Valance were both shown on HDNMV. Both in black & white and both were visually excellent.
