PR: Consumers Overwhelmingly Choose “Blu”

Just like the original DVDs, PCs, and now HDTV's....assuming Blue Ray clears up its quality control issues on its media....price ultimately drives the mass market. Unless they get close to the HD-DVD pricepoint, they're toast in the end.

Haven't people heard that production companies in the porn industry have chosen HD-DVD? I'm sorry, BluRay, but you're done. We have some lovely parting gifts for you. If you have one, sell it quick to the nearest dope who hasn't heard the news yet.

And don't link me to the Sony press release that BluRay will have a 98% market share in 2009. That's just them trying to cover their ass and convince people to buy. BluRay is the new Betamax.

I do not think it was really EVER a 100% ban. Seems more the case that some user or maybe media BD hater took a known detailed comment and twisted it or mis-quoted it to fool or mis-lead others.

"The pornographers’ progress with HD may also be somewhat slowed by Sony, one of the main backers of the Blu-ray high-definition disc format. Sony said last week that, in keeping with a longstanding policy, it would not mass-produce pornographic videos on behalf of the movie makers.

The decision has forced pornographers to use the competing HD-DVD format or, in some cases, to find companies other than Sony that can manufacture copies of Blu-ray movies.

In March, Vivid plans to release “Debbie Does Dallas ... Again,” its first feature for both HD-DVD and Blu-ray."

Just keep looking at the NPD figures. December - won by BluRay. January -- Won by BluRay. February -- so far BluRay wining. I have always said that you can not beat the numbers game. Too many studios, too many titles, too many players. I have made several postings about BluRay's lead in Japan, Australia, & now Canada and the US and Europe is next.

Everyone said that putting a BluRay drive in the PS3 was a bad decision by Sony and that it pushed the price too high. Well, I guess just three short months later some of those same posters are lamenting that M$ did not include HD-DVD in the XBOX360 when it was released. Since it was not ready M$ did the smart thing and release their product which has done very well for them. And since M$ themselves stated that they could just as easily offer a BluRay player as the HD-DVD player they have now I expect that by summer we will see a BluRay add-on for the XBOX360.

Maybe Sony did learn a lesson from the Beta vs VHS days. They had a better system but the numbers were against them. I guess they learned something.

Maybe Sony did learn a lesson from the Beta vs VHS days. They had a better system but the numbers were against them. I guess they learned something.

Ya. The lesson Sony learned was to buy the studios, make back door deals with others, and insure that a majority of the software would be "unavailable" in the competing format. That's fair, eh?

If in the early days of VHS/Beta, if you could only get Star Wars, Star Trek, and other in demand titles only on Beta, don't you think that Beta would have had a better chance.

Technology does not win format wars, it's the software titles that do. By keeping titles from appearing on the "other guys" format, you force the hand of the consumer to chose one or the other (or both) not by technology, but by product.

The only way there could ever be a true format war would be if every single title released was available in BOTH formats, and the consumer REALLY got to decide which one they wanted.

Everything else is just politics, and the end result is that CONSUMERS LOSE.

The consumer does not lose. They win. As soon as BD is selected as the winner we will see prices start to fall. More competition between BD manufacturers for your buck. More classic hits on BD on the market at a better price. Surely you don't think Combo discs and THD dics are the wave of the future? There is nothing HD-DVD can do that BD can not in PQ and SQ. Not anymore, just look at the latest reviews and sales figures.

And I don't know how many times I have seen this in print about Sony owning the BD format but they doe not own the BD format entirely. There are other compainies in this deal. Why do you think so many manufacturers of standalone players are backing BluRay? Why are so many movie studios backing BluRay? Why are the sales of BD standalones, PS3s and BD movies increasing?

Oh Yeah, back door deals, Sony is losing millions of dollars on the PS3 but somehow, somewhere they have billions to bribe other companies to do just BD? You HD-DVD fanboys are losing it. The bottom line is that there is more money in BD for everyone then HD-DVD. Sony is only underwriting startup cost for BD transfers -- they are not paying for the entire process. And they promised that the PS3 would include a BD drive. And they promised no cheap hardware at least the first year.

On the other hand, HD-DVD players are supposed to be cheap. However, the XA2 lowest price right now is $799 on the internet -- that's CHEAP? Oh, how about we get the Chinese to manufacture these things for pennys-- oh yeah that is going to be some great build quality? And lets not forget those combo discs and THD! Heck, can you buy a combo discs under $29.95 -- not at Walmart! And do any of you HD-DVD fanboys really believe that THD discs are going to be cheaper than $30?

No, it is the HD-DVD group that is shooting themselves in the foot. Trying to make cheaper (in every sense of the word) players while driving up the cost of HD-DVD movies. All this while BD movies are getting better, with more titles hitting the streets and cheaper! And you guys wonder why BD is pulling away?

I am amazed at the loyalty of you Sony Freaks. Sony has screwed up the marketing of almost every product they have ever released, from Beta to SACD. I cannot understand the product loyalty that some folks have.

"SACD is a winner, there are thousands of titles out there!" If you don't think that Sony used it's muscle with record companies and studios to get SACD in a position to crush DVD-Audio, then you are nothing but a blind loyalist.

I am NOT an HD-DVD fanboy. I am a "let's not screw the customer" fanboy. I have purchased in my lifetime so many products that have gone by the wayside because of corporate greed it's ridiculous.

Every BluRay fan, SACD fan, MD fan, etc etc never will admit that a level playing field will reveal the true winner, and if it's Sony, so be it. I think SACD is a great format, but I believe that the way Sony handled it killed the HiRez and surround music market.

There is a strong potential that this will happen again with BluRay because the regular guy doesn't need to have his DVD's look better, and can't be bothered with the fact that there are TWO players and TWO sections of discs. What a freaking JOKE. Lessons are never learned. Ever. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

And before you call me an HD-DVD "fanboy" again, please take off your Sony Shorts! :D

BD has won the format war...in our home

As I mentioned in another thread, "The format war is over...at least in our home, we purchased an outstanding BD player for our new Mits 1080p for $599 - that also plays games too! We don't own a single PS3 game and probably won't for several more weeks." It's funny, because I preferred VHS over Betamax and couldn't get very exciting about SACD.

Well, if you HD-DVD fanboys and Sony hating gurus could just get your head out of the ground for one second you would realize that Sony is not pulling all of the strings in the BD camp. As a matter of fact it is Disney who is preventing the porn studios access to BD production here in the US not Sony. And it is Pioneer who is bringing to the market the first standalone with HDmi1.3, 1080p 24fps and ethernet connection. Also, when the Pioneer hits the market the Java-BD will become available. Gee, no co-incidences there? It is just not Sony driving the BD market but alot of other BD players -- studios and player manufacturers.

The lesson being taught here is to Toshiba, M$ and Universal. We call it marketing 101, corner as much of the market as you can and eventually you will own the market. Toshiba played that game during the Beta vs VHS wars and they won. So just when are you guys going to jump on Toshiba's back for dropping this ball? All Sony did was get all the major players on their side (except for Toshiba and Universal). Even Bill Gates has said if BD wins M$ can easily bring out a BD player for the XBOX360. So Sony did something right and some of you guys are upset.

I with alot of other BD supports asked you guys to wait until November and starting in August you guys started spouting the BD is done mana. Now the goat is in your corner. HD-DVD is not done but if all the BD title releases and standalone sales much less the PS3 sales don't do in HD-DVD just wait -- those Combo discs and THD discs with their higher prices will.

So far, the Pioneer BDP-HD1 Blu-ray player looks good- it's got an ethernet connection. But it costs $1500 and doesn't play CDs! Well, since no BD player is likely to play DVD-audio, I guess I'll have to keep my old JVC player hooked up anyway. But $1500!

^ You should be able to find a nice discount on any HD DVD or BD player. My favorite is Panasonic's BMP-BD10 as it is the onlly one with 7.1 analog outputs and Panasonic is the only BD manufacturer who has announced a firmware upgrade for lossless audio.

Panasonic's BMP-BD10 can be found for as low as $899

I won't get one without an ethernet port for firmware updates/other features. Does the Panny have an ethernet port? The Panasonic site seems to be keeping all info on this player a secret. They don't even list the types of discs it'll play. I'd love one that played all DVD formats, including DVD-RAM & DVD-Audio, and CDs. But I realize that's not likely to happen.

I figure I'll be calling you sometime this summer. Maybe more ethernet equipped BD players will hit the market.

Thank you! Does it also have an ethernet port?

Is the "fast forward" action smooth?

No, it has no ethernet port that I can see on the back.

It has 1 HDMI, 7.1ch analog outs, 2 2Ch outs, component out, and composite and S-Video.

I only have a few BluRay discs at this point, and have not noticed any fast forward issues, although I am not even sure that I have fast forwarded at all.

The main reason I bought this player was because of it's DVD-Audio capability. As far as I know, this is the only player of either format that will do HiRez surround. Sony has SACD in the PS3, but not in any of their boxes. The amazing thing is that the Pioneer does neither of these formats. Bummer in my book, being a surround sound guy.

Thank you. Hopefully one day a full featured unit at reasonable cost will come out.
