EchoStar 2 Deemed a Total Loss

(SkyReport) While DISH Network celebrated the launch of a new satellite, the EchoStar XI that was lofted into space late Tuesday, the DBS company lamented the loss of another bird.

The company disclosed in a Securities and Exchange Commission filing released Wednesday that its EchoStar 2 satellite recently experienced a failure that appears to have rendered the spacecraft a total loss. The satellite was launched in September 1996.

The spacecraft had been operating from the 148-degree orbital location primarily as a back-up satellite. However, the bird had provided local channels to Alaska and six other small markets, DISH said in its filing.

All programming and services previously broadcast from EchoStar 2 were placed on EchoStar 1, the primary satellite at the 148 degree location, within several hours after the failure, stated the company.
