Hello all:
Ali editor rs232 for openbox s9. Cannot get editor to work. Use null cable and try to upload to computer from s9 and says cannot open port. (tried on xp s/w & vista sme results :NG) Tried opening abs files from usb stick as open bin file : say cannot open file. I’ve downloaded several ali editors from dif sites to make sure I have good copy.
Cable I use works great with factory FLU loaders & CS loaders. Tried ali editor with usb to rs232 on laptop & still no success. I ‘ve no problems using openbox with usb to update /change files.
Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks, Utah2

utah, I use a 4gb Usb drive for mine and use the Usb port on the back of the receiver. No problems using it with Win7 on laptop and Vista on desktop. The editor I have was from Sadouns website. I save the file I "dumped" as the Sathawk calls it. Open the editor in the computer and find the .abs file and seems to work..When you save to the USB does it show it saved anything at all from the backup? Could it be the usb sticK? Got me stumped... Maybe someone else has an idea on why it's not working for you....Blind

I'm not home right now where my notes are, but seems to me I had to change the file ext from .abs to something else before you bring it from the usb stick in to the editor.

Yep, you have to change the channel dump from ".abs" extension to edit the file with a ".dbs" extension. Then after editting it, you must change it back to ".abs" extension to load it back into the receiver, via USB stick.

Thanks to .: Pixl, Brentb & Blindowl for replies.

Editor drop down box says to open .abs file as bin file & I do this but file does not open . ABS files are definitely on usb stick, as I can load into openbox from stick ,plus shows on computer.
I will try to get copy of editor from Sadoun site , maybe it will work.

My other problem with editor is it does not reconize com port on either of 2 computers. It asks to test port before communicating with box & says port test failed. I change to various other ports & still fails. As I mentioned I used editors & Loaders for other STBs with no problems. It may be something I'am doing wrong( iam certainly no wiz w/computers for sure!) I just find it a lot easier to manipulate stb data on computer then with remote.
Thanks for any additional suggestions that may be offered.

Utah,

Between Brent and myself we may have mis informed you. (Darn, hate when that happens) I found my notes on the usb procedure and the .abs/.dbs thing is reversed. I'll c/p the instructions below. I recommend the usb method over the comm port cable. It does work with the OpenBox but too many details to go wrong. Try the usb again.

Copying the file to USB
Plug in USB drive.

Go to MENU > TOOLS > DUMP BY USB

Arrow to MISC Files then arrow down to SELECT & DUMP and press OK

Press green button to add TP_PROG.dbs

Press yellow button to copy the file to your USB drive.

Loading/saving with Ali Editor

IMPORTANT: YOU MUST CHANGE THE .dbs EXTENSION TO .abs IN ORDER FOR THE ALi EDITOR TO PROCESS THE FILE. AFTER WORKING WITH THE FILE YOU MUST NAME IT BACK TO .dbs TO PROPERLY LOAD IT TO THE OPENBOX. FAILURE TO DO SO WILL RESULT IN FLASH FAILURE. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!

In Ali Editor-

FILE > OPEN

A box appears. At the bottom select OPEN BIN FILE(*.abs). Then find the file you saved from the OpenBox.

When loading it will ask you if you want to work with default database or user database. Default database is just the satellite list & TP's from FridgeFTA/OpenBoxS9.us, no channels. User database contains the satellite list & TP's along with the channels, satellites and TP's that you have added. Select user database to work with your channels.

After working with the data do not save. Go to FILE > EXPORT. Select type as OPEN BIN FILE(*.abs) and save to your flash drive or other location. DON'T FORGET TO CHANGE THE EXTENSION TO .dbs BEFORE FLASHING BACK TO YOUR OPENBOX.

It will prompt you again if you want to export user database or default database. Select user database in most cases. Default Database will write your file perminately into memory, when you default the OpenBox all your data comes back. In many cases not a good idea.

Flashing the file to the OpenBox is the same as reading it from it, except select UPGRADE BY USB instead of DUMP BY USB.

After flashing your channel data, turn the OpenBox off for 10 seconds using the remote control. When you turn it back on your data file has replaced the data that was in memory. Failure to turn it off then on will result in a messed up channel list until you do so.

After working with the data do not save. Go to FILE > EXPORT. Select type as OPEN BIN FILE(*.abs) and save to your flash drive or other location.
I always use "Save" when I am saving back to the same file I loaded. Wonder why the writer of these instructions says not to...
