DiSEqC switches are for multiple single output LNBFs feeding a receiver.

Multi-switches are for dual output LNBFs feeding one or more receivers. Example: A 4x4 would feed two dual output LNBs for up to four receivers.

Ok thanks for the information, need to do more research! What i want to do is run four different single lnb's to four different receivers on two fixed dishes to start, then later has i learn more add a motor to one of them!

You will need 4 dual output LNBFs with an 8x4 multi-switch. Not possible to use 4 standard single output LNBFs and feed 4 receivers.

Each receiver needs to have access to both horizontal and vertical polarities from each satellite. A standard single output LNBF is only capable of sending one polarity output at a time.

Example - Single output LNBF feeding four receivers: If one receiver tunes a horizontal polarity channel, all other three receivers could not receive vertical channels from that satellite.

For a basic understanding of what can be accomplished with switches, you might want to read the entire thread Iceberg linked.
Take a look further down in post #9, which is labeled:

Multiswitch Example: serious
Real-World Multiswitch Example - 8 LNBs, 4 Receivers
