Thanks for the answers to the other thread where people have reported that you lose the PPV ordering (via remote) functionality if you don't have a phone line connected.

But, what about for a customer that's getting the R10 installed for the first time? Do they need a phone line to activate it? I tried searching for it but the threads usually talk about after the receiver has been set up and activated not before. Thanks a bunch!

By the way, this customer never had a phone line in the home and don't intend to. We obviously haven't installed too many TiVo's (we do more Dish) and especially in a customer's home where they don't have a phone line. So please help. Thank you.

You have to have a phone line to activate a DVR, no way around it. Once activated you don't need a phone line anymore and will be nagged daily to call in after 30 days.

So you have 2 choices really:
1) Just take it to a friends and activate it there
2) You *can* use a PPP connection to an Win XP computer to complete the daily calls including the setup.

Thanks. When you say "activate", do you mean that we have to physically call D* to let them know that phone line is installed? Or "activate" as in on-screen steps to initialize the R10? Thanks.
