With DISH if you're on a channel you can hit menu 6-1-1 and it will display the signal strength of the channel, as well as, the sat and transponder. Is there a similar way to test a Directv channel.

Not quite true. On the Signal Strength page there is an option to view the strength on a transponder.
There you can select the Sat and TP.

Back in the day, the old RCAs had a menu that would tell you that info and you. Ould go the other way around as well.

I was looking at my signal strenght on my hopper this morning before I went to work and it was around 65! I have not checked it in about a year but it was always around 75-80, but never higher. Going to keep an eye on it for a couple days until my DTV install takes over.
