[VOOM/DISH/OTA] Dishnet installation-4 orbital locations needed

Unlike some people's experiences with VOOM, Dish called several
times to confirm installation date and time period.
Here is a review of my installation.

The install went very well overall but it took quite some time it
seemed at 5 hours. The were DNS direct employees so they were very
good and they tried to explain a lot and accomodate me on Dish
placement to keep the neighbors happy. They installed a Superdish
for orbital positions 121, 119, and 110 and they installed a Dish
500 with a single LNBF for 61.5 which is where VOOM is.
There was some confusion because the work order didn't include a
DP44 switch which is needed for 4 orbital locations and the
installer did not bring one. One fellow showed up at 11:45AM and we
discussed the install. He only had a Superdish and no DP44 but he
wasn't aware of VOOM and did not know he would need it because even
though it was the "VOOM conversion center" I ordered from it was not
on the order.
Anyway, he called in and the supervisor said he would be there in an
hour to get started with the installation so they could close out
the work order today. Supervisor would bring the DP44 multiswitch.
They had never installed a DP44 before so I was the first VOOM
conversion in the area. They had a small amount of trouble with it
but got it working fine. They cleaned up all the wiring and I was
good to go. The original installer was there the whole time and left
about 5:30PM. A long install.
I have a 942, an 811, and a 301 receiver all working great today and
Irecorded enterprise on the DVR last night very easily. the jury is
out on the HD and Satellite delivered locals. The OTA tuners on the
942 and 811 scanned everything i expected. I am not sure that the HD
picture even on the VOOM channels is as good as what came from vOOM.
I will do an A/B comparison today on Discovery hD from Dishnet vs.
HDD200/4DTV. we'll see.
I am glad I did not buy the equipment and install myself. I saved a
lot of my time, the cost of the DP44 switch which approaches $100,
and cost of receivers and dishes that may be useless after the MPEG
4 switchover and satellite transponder reallocation. The goal of
Dishnet is to be able to do an install like mine and need to utilize
less satellites in a specific CONUS location. So there will be more
compression, etc. but it just depends on how the picture looks in
the end. My gut feel is that it may be a few years before we get
back to what VOOM gave us...

So is it worth it then?

I am also still unclear to whether or not the 942 can do the following ;

Using only my HDtv (ie no other televisions involved), can it record two
over the air (ie local channels) channels at the same time in HD?
- In other words will it record CSI Miami(CBS) and Medium(NBC) at the same
time, IN 1080 HD
Using only my HDtv (ie no other televisions involved), can I picture in
picture between the two channels it's recording?
- In other words, if I'm watching CSI Miami and the commercials start, can
I pause it, PIP to Medium and watch that and then PIP back to CSI Miami?

I understand it has this TV1,TV2 crap where you can watch another television
using the feed from the DVR. I am not interested in that whatsoever.

I told my Dad last night that for a $250 FEE to LEASE the box, it had better
do everything I want or I'd be a fool or pay that kind of money.

I _really_ want to switch to Dish so I can get the 10 Voom channels
(especially RAVE), but I'm not forking out hundreds of dollars if it doesn't
get me what I have today with Time Warner Cable (minus Voom channels)

It will take a bit for me to let you know. I'm still reading the book....It
has PIP and two seperate tuners so I suspect it will work. I watched two
channels and swapped back and forth freely in a trial run but I believe
there is only 1 OTA tuner so I'm not sure about that.

I had Dish and the 942 installed earlier this week. I'll answer your
questions and let the group know what I think:

942 has one OTA tuner, so no cannot record 2 OTA's at the same time.

Here's a list of quirks that I've found so far:

First of all, I would say the picture quality is great, even from the
recordings. It's the best SD quality I've ever seen in my house and I don't
notice much difference in the HD picture.

I only have OTA guide for 1 of my 7 local digital stations. Called dish,
they say locals are not sending out the guide over the air which is what the
942 uses. I haven't been able to confirm that, but it's pretty useless to
have a HD DVR and not be able to record those because the guide doesn't show
the programs.

It has a single/duo mode where TV 2 can show what TV 1 has, or can be
independent to see it's own programming. I am finding some of the PVR
functionality too limiting in the duo mode (think of TV 2 only controlling
tuner 2), but I need it for my household to have different TV's pulling from
the same DVR.
If you have it in single mode, I belive it would work better at utilizing
the 2 Tuners (using the 2nd to record before using 1st). In duo mode, think
of it more as 2 seperate DVR's but both TV's being able to get at the
recordings.

In duo mode, I would consider the DVR to be more stupid than intelligent. A
show won't record on another tuner if the scheduled tuner is busy and the
other one is free. You have no way of forcing the conflict to record on the
other tuner even though it's open. I have instances where one program won't
record because it's a lower priority of another show. Problem is the other
show is already set to not record since it's a duplicate and the DVR doesn't
pick up on that.

I really am NOT impressed on what Dish thinks a DVR should be. They treat
it as more of a glorified VCR and not an intelligent recorder. My wife and
I ran into a limitation of 30-35 'timers' set to record. The Dish CSR says
the limit should be 50 between the 2 tuners. I think that's way too low.
Think about it... in theory you could setup 1/2 hour programs to record all
day, 24 hrs in a day = 48 programs. One day is already way over the limit
of 35 I've reached, how would you get close to scheduling a week? Heck, you
have 3 tuners, that's only 10 programs per tuner for a week. Not only that,
it just won't schedule programs if you have 288 instances in the list for
the next 9 days. They really need to get rid of these limits, or up it to
300 favorites and 1000 instances.

The scheduled recordings do not give enough information to determine what
each item is. For instance.. I'm setting up a favorite for "Nascar Racing",
I will get a bunch of items. In one weekend you will have a show for
qualifying, final practice, and then the race. The guide does not even give
me enough information for me to determine which each of these are.

That said, if you use the 942 on one TV, most of these problems go away. I
know it's a recent release and there will be fixes, but I was quite suprised
with the issues I've run into when you won't find a negative review of it
anywhere on the net.
