[VOOM] OTA reception

One member on SatGuys mentioned that VOOM could shut down the
receivers after 1-31, then you would lose OTA reception. He
suggested disconnecting the sat. cable and leaving the box on to
keep receiving OTA channels. How can VOOM do that? Can they send a
signal down from the satelite to disable the receivers? What can
they do through the phone line? Should we disconnect that too?

------------------------

Re: [VOOM] OTA reception

Why would they do that? Another rumor? If there is any doubt disconnect
the Sat cable and the OTA should still work according to most theories.

RE: [VOOM] OTA reception

Voom is on the record as saying they will continue service during the
transition period. The post(s) on Satguys are nothing more than half-baked
speculation.

The deal is not done. It must get approved by the FCC, for one. How do you
think that would look when they marched before the agency and had to answer
for cutting off current customers?

I wouldn't worry about it.

Re: [VOOM] OTA reception

I agree with you again Bob, but if it makes people less nervous let them
disconnect Rainbow 1 on the 31st. I have no intentions of doing so. In
fact, the VOOM installer is coming on Monday AM to install 2 more receivers
adding to my original one and do an OTA antenna upgrade. I am taking
advantage of the $1 promo on right now. I will be agreeing to 6 months of
subscribing with the promo. Obviously, if they stop providing service, I
don't have to keep paying for that subscription but I suspect VOOM service
will be there the whole six months. Maybe a name change or new management
though....

[VOOM] Re: OTA reception

My OTA is no longer working, so they definitely disabled it. I had
VOOM turned off until the DVR is available, and OTA worked for
several months, but suddenly the screen now says that it's not
authorized. What really pisses me off about the whole thing is that
I paid the full $800 for this, and the box should continue to work
regardless if VOOM is around or not (for OTA reception).

I think common sense is not cancelling because of VOOM's lack of a DVR.

If it helps I agree with you. Since you bought the boxes for $800 you ought
to be entitled to use them for OTA, with or without a sub. VOOM clearly
doesn't own the airwaves or the equipment, just their service and OTA is not
deeded to VOOM for sure. I honestly believe the FCC would agree too, if
they cared about such a small minority.

Check with the FCC

Hi:
Check the FCC regs regarding set top boxes that receive OTA signals. They are pretty clear in that a box must receive all available signals (meaning it can't exclude some channels) and I think that you should be protected in that a third party (VOOM) can not block your OTA reception to equipment that you purchased. One can also make the argument that if VOOM is now failing to provide the program guide for the OTA channels then they should modify the box to receive the program guide information that is included for free along with the OTA signal from each station as this a part of the signal.

This is not a minor issue as there are probably a couple of thousand VOOM customers with purchased boxes that are entitled to receive their OTA signals should VOOM cease operating.

When I read your note I quickly turned on the TV to make sure I still have
OTA signals and I did. I'm in Forest, VA.

Hi Again:

The FCC reg is Section 15.117 regarding television receivers. Since the VOOM box was sold as both a satellite receiver and a television receiver it is subject to the regulations regarding television receivers.

...The reference in this section to TV broadcast receivers also
includes devices, such as TV interface devices, that incorporate the tuner portion of a TV broadcast receiver and that are equipped with an antenna or antenna terminals that can be used for the off-the-air reception of TV broadcast signals....

...TV broadcast receivers shall be capable of adequately receiving all channels allocated by the Commission to the television broadcast service......

...TV broadcast receivers are required to provide useable picture and sound commensurate with their video and audio capabilities when receiving digital
television signals..

[VOOM] Re: OTA reception

I believe that I have common sense...

I had them disable the service as I was at my other house during the
summer. I suppose I should have continued to pay for the service
even though I wasn't here....

In any case, I DID pay $800 for the box, and OTA is not part of their
service, the box is receiving local channels, and has nothing to do
with VOOM other than the box receives the channels, and I own the
box. Now why do you think that because I stopped VOOM, I should lose
my OTA channels?

------------------------

I agree completely and if I were in your shoes I'd be filing a lawsuit
against Voom.

Thankfully I did the rental so I didn't lose any money.

Robert,
I think you are 100% right. He should demand every cent of his purchase
money refunded for starters and go from there. If he bought the box from
VOOM they don't own it any more and they don't own the OTA channels either.
The only thing they are right to turn off is VOOM service itself. I wonder
what the FCC stance would be? Or the local affiliates?

It seems like VOOM needs a refresher in FCC regs. I can see how a rental
box can be turned off completely for non-payment, but how can they
legitimately think it's OK to turn off the OTA on a receiver that they no
longer own? I guess that until someone goes after them legally they will be
right....

I read it as the OTA's are provided and the tuner at no extra charge. But
but tuner is part of the Voom package. You cancel and they have every right
to disable that feature. Yeah I think it sucks. As for the FCC reg below.
That won't apply to VOOM. The tuner was part of the service, you cancel
Voom and the receiver is canceled as well. No where does it read that the
tuner must still be accessible to the user if the service is canceled. As
long as you are a VOOM Subscriber the below would apply
