[VOOM] The New VOOM

We say in real estate that there is no problem property, just problem
ownership.
I think this is the case with VOOM.
VOOM may have been a financial drain for Cablevision but it may be a easy
deal for Dish.
For just $200 million, Echostar gets the South Dakota uplink facility, the
Rainbow Sat, and probably some choice programming.
I bet Echostar has already figured out that they can simply add those High
Def channels to their SD and HD channel lie-ups and have the greatest
selection of channels existant.
They could also leave the existing VOOM subscribers in place and just
continue the service to us, while selling more Mot STBs to new subscribers.
No one says you can't run two ships at one time.
Existing VOOM subscibers could also get a new STB from Dish and a HD DVR.
They will just shoot each Voom channel out on two frequencies.
I don't think Echostar is going to toss out and dead-end existing VOOM
subscribers. They need HD Sat capacity badly.
They aren't going to throw out/close down their new $200 million dollar
baby.
VOOM makes more sense to Echostar than Cablevision now, and especially at
the bargain price of $200 million.
I also feel that there are more than 26,000 subscribers. Dolan Sr. was
probably yelling at James that they were just starting on the growth curve.
We've all seen the mass advertising in the last Quarter.
I'm not worried about my $800 investment in VOOM last April.
Yes, there may be change. I may lose my free HBO as a Pioneer subscriber.
I may eventually pay more than $40.00 a month.
But to true HD freaks like me, I get more value with VOOM than with the
crummy SD that costs more with Cox Cable.
And since most cities served by Dish get local channels via Sat, Dish won't
be saddled with the local antenna installation mess and dissatisfaction
factor (upgrades) that is financially killing VOOM.
So, fellow VOOMERS, don't cry. This may be the greatest ride of your life.
I think we will all get grandfathered and come down in what's called a
"Golden Parachute".

Just to be accurate. At this pont only, Echostar only bought the one satellite and the new uplink facility. No programming, production facility or customer base.

This, my friends, is a true optimist. :)

A couple of things;

1)They didn't get any "choice" programming AFAIK. Only the satellite and
support facility. The programming is part of the remaining assets that CVC
has yet to sell.

2)Because of the satellite orbit location, DISH can't simply add the
bandwidth to their lineup and have a big leg up on the competition. It would
require 2 dishes for customers to reach both their current stuff and this
new bird. Possibly the FCC, DOJ, DoD and anybody else that needs to weigh in
allows them to move the bird, but for now they don't meet the single dish
FCC spec. Maybe they offer a HD service independent of their regular deal. I
don't think even DISH has figured this out yet.

This little soap opera hasn't played out yet, by any stretch.

[VOOM] Re: The New VOOM

If Charlie did decide to use the content for Dish Network AND keep
Voom customers happy, wouldn't he have an issue with the conflict
between Digicipher and MPEG2/DVB???

I'd rather listen to STAN than all the cry babies, whining about
"There Goes Voom. They may surprise y'all and be here for years to
come.
But I was a Teenager in the 60's I believe anything
