Record to DVD

I have seen this topic used over and over. Now for something of a twist. I have recorded to dvd before but I had issues with DirectTv and switched to FIOS. Not the best move but I am stuck with it for 2 years. Now that I need to access the movies on the DVR I have from DirecTV how can I do this now that I am not connected to DirectTV? Soes the DVR info need connection with DirectTV to allow me to play on that DVR? So far my attempts have been futile.

I can't speak for all models, but I have an SD-Tivo DVR that was de-activated, and I was able to power it up and play the existing recordings.

That won't work on the R15, R16, HR20 or HR21.
