I record everything I watch with a 2 year old Sony(with hard drive) dvd recorder and have never had any trouble recording any and all movies from my C band. Am wanting to buy a newer dvd recorder and am reading that the newer ones have a copy protection chip in them and I wont be able to record some (mostly newer) movies. Do all the newer dvd recorders have this chip? If so I guess I will have to buy a older used recorder. Any helpful information on this?
Thanks John

I read a report from a owner of a new recorder and he said he couldnt record some movies. I have been looking on internet and have been told that networks like HBO broadcast the protection. Im not sure of anything.

I bought a toshiba dvd recorder, a little over a year ago, it works good, but will only record hd in sd mode,
and then upconvert it for playback, go figure!.

Macrovision is turned on by a bit on some digital broadcasts or DVD recordings.
It is not actually part of the transmission, but injected into the video stream, by the playback device.

Search the internet with any of these phrases: Macrovision Killer, Video Enhancer, or Video Stabilizer.

I ... have never had any trouble recording any and all movies from my C band.
Am wanting to buy a newer dvd recorder ....
Are you keeping the same receiver? That is where the problem comes from.
If it's too old to put out Macrovision, then I don't see a problem with any VCR nor DVD recorder.
Do all the newer dvd recorders have this chip?
If so I guess I will have to buy a older used recorder.
All will put out Macrovision if commanded.
All will refuse to record Macrovision-contaminated video.

The 4DTV has Macrovision built in the receiver, the bit to turn it on has to be set by the programmer. I have only seen that set on PPV porn once on a HITS feeds. I had ALL the movie channels you can sub to on the 4DTV before and never had a problem recording. The worst thing they can do is turn on Macrovision with Colorstripeing. There are processsors made that can deal with that but thats all I can say about that. I don't think HBO - Show - Starz etc enable the Macrovision bit ever at least on the master feeds.
