I got a Pansat 3500SD on ebay for $80 and I am suspicous based on the email with the seller that is has some "third party" software on it. I did a bit of research on it and it appears I could just reflash it with factory, but maybe not if they used a special loader file?

Anyone have experience with this receiver and reflashing to factory software after someone has altered it?

sure you can flash back to factory software. I had the same thing (won a Fortec off Ebay and it had hack software in it) and flashed it back using the software on the Fortec site and it worked great :)

Pansat's site is www.pansatusa.com

80.00 eh? Maybe I need to start hanging out on ebay more looking for that stuff... I am really getting annoyed with the hardware error on my pansat that makes the option to switch from tv to radio dissappear after you reflash it and then it goes to radio once, and tv again, but won't ever go back to radio til a reflash.

Thanks Iceberg. I figured I could reflash it. The email I got from seller said basically

"Has latest software from BL (?) and used the Bin 80 to load it"

I did a bit of looking and I was not sure what Bin 80 was but is apparently a special file they had to load before loading the other software, that is why I wasn't sure if it screwed anything up.

Mastermesh, yeah, I just the Best Offer option on ebay and just kinda lowballed the guy to see what his counter offer would be, To my surprise he just accepted my offer.

I found that info too. It looks like for the illegal stuf to work they have to load this "Bin 80" first. So I think if you loaded factory software, that would override everything.

I recently picked up a 3500S (SD without card included) really cheap (100C$) from a thief and found it extremely easy to flash back to original firmware. Just download the latest firmware from pansatusa.com, plop it onto the SD card (I used a Mac for this) , plug it in to the SD slot on the receiver, then follow the menu items under SD memory to reflash. A lot easier than using a serial cable.

The SD slot is a much more useful feature than I imagined it would be, especially since my 2500A takes up the only serial port on my PC.

Great! Thanks for the first-hand account Mark. I am more excited now about my steal of a deal on the 3500 I got.

I just got one of those Ebay "Deals" from a hacker too :)

Got a Pansat 5000. He said it has the "latest factory software" yet its from mid 05 (newest is Jan 06) and when I hit "HDD" on the unit there are 9 movies recorded

-all on Echo 7
-all somewhat current (well maybe a cfew months ago)
-logged as PPV XXX (channel)

Working on flashing it back to factory...and it reeks of cigarette smoke) :(:(
(I hate cigarette smoke)

I just got done flashing the 5000 back to factory fresh :)
mine overrode the hack software.

Great! Thanks for the additional feedback. It was that part about the Bin80 loader that had me concerned. Doesn't look like there is anything to worry about.

$80 for a 3500sd is an excellent deal SatinKzo, if you decide to sell it let me know.... LOL

laff, I have been wanting one of these since I got into FTA, but just didn't want to spend 200 bucks. I have been lurking on ebay for over a month now pretty consistently looking for a deal, I got lucky and I can't wait.

I have a fortec merc II right now ,but I really wanted to try a pansat and I like the SD card part for MP3 and stuff on this one. Plus this one doesn't have the DBS sat or Panasat problem IIRC when it scans a DBS sat (dummy channels).

correct

The 3500 doesnt have the dreaded "Pansat issue" where it loads 13 dummy TP's per TP when you scan a DBS satellite

Well, I got the 3500 today. This thing still had plastic on it. Looks like they only opened it once. Anyways, reflashed to factory software, but I can't get bin-80 off it.. It displays on the LCD each time I turn it on. Otherwise it seems to be working fine.

I might have to sell the old merc II if this receiver is as solid as the reviews say.

Mine will show b-70 when I unplug it and plug it back in, or flip the power switch on the back off and back on. However, it doesn't do it if I just cut it off from the front of the receiver or with the remote, at that time it changes from the channel to the time, and vice versa when I cut it on in this way. b-80 is probably the firmware/software that's installed and is supposed to show at those times. In other words, it's supposed to do that.

Thanks voom. I see that now that it only does that with the back power, not the front standby switch.

Ewwww.... Hope you sterilized the thing before touching it with your bare hands. Hate to think what the thing would look like under a black light...

Yeah, especially since it had some third party software on it. I could venture a guess on what was primarily watched

The XXX in the above is not porn (although it was probably watched) but the DIsh Network Channel. Like it said PPV 519

Still working on getting rid of the smoke smell
