I knew he had a stroke. I remember him both as a player and manager. R.I.P.

As a Mets fan (who would say one was that wasn't) Jim Fregosi is forever etched in my mind as the man who they traded Nolan Ryan away to the Cal Angels for in the winter of 1971. Ryan went on to throw 7 no hitters and strike out 5,714 batters (almost a thousand more than second place Randy Johnson) in a Hall of Fame career. Coming off 6 of 7 all-star seasons, Fregosi went on to hit .232 with 5 homers and 32 RBI's in 1972 for the Mets and gone by 73 as his career fizzled. Regarded by most Mets fans as the worst trade in Mets history (a long but distinguised list of stinkers). I did like him as manager and never held ill will and am sorry to hear he is gone.
