Hello, Im new to this forum, but looks great from what ive read. I have a question. I have a direct tv hd dvr hr 23. I have a monster surge suppressor. I want to connect the coax cable in to the monster surge , but there is only one in and out for the satellite. There are 4 coax connections. But one is for sat and one is for cable. When i use both, because i have a dvr. I get signal, but lose my guide. So i really need to 2 sets of sat coax connections. So i bought a splitter for the 2 incoming coax cables and split them. One coax to the surge and one to the box. Im just not sure if this was the best solution. Can anyone tell me if there is a better solution. Thanks!

Yep. The best solution is DON'T DO IT! There is no reason to run your cable through those things. The system should be grounded outside, so there's no reason to do that. Plus, it's a satellite signal. There's nothing to filter out. It doesn't matter what it says those connections are for, you're asking for trouble using them. Splitters also will not work. There's a reason two lines are coming into the room. The DVR needs one for each tuner. Combining and splitting will not work. (If they could do that, they wouldn't have run two lines in) Those surge protectors are great for plugging in the power cables to, but they will just cause you headaches trying to run sat cables through. Plus there's no benefit to you. The best thing to do is leave it like the technician installed it. Both lines going directly to the receiver. Hope that helps!

Do you or anyone have any suggestions for a esata external drive for direct tv hr 23 dvr hd box? is seagate any good?

I've been using a Seagate ESATA drive for many years now, but I have not used the HR23, I would think it should work fine though.
There are EHD's that don't work, but I have yet to see a Seagate that doesn't.
